From the UK Lucy-listers, you see, I sense a fortitude and intensity of purpose that I admire. I've come to this conclusion because I have noticed that after every few of my posts nattering on about some obscure topic like Excedrin or tomatoes (oh, wait, I didn't do that on the list...but I CAN go on about tomatoes...don't get me started), there tends to come a post from a UK list member who, carefully ignoring the whole ruckus and refusing to bow to the circus-like atmosphere that I threaten to create on the Lucy-list, says mainly, "THESE are the Lucy UK dates." As in, let's not fool around here...let's get down to business and figure out the important stuff, like WHEN Lucy is coming and WHERE she'll be. What focus! What commitment! I like it...I really do. And it's going to translate into some excellent reviews for the list in September and early October. I'm sure of it. :-) Benay who has never been to the UK and doesn't even have a passport, but thinks it sounds incredibly neat and really, really wants to go someday ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 16:37:17 -0500 From: "Timothy Bruce" Subject: [lucy-list] Comin' thru with a review or two... >>>From the UK Lucy-listers, you see, I sense a fortitude and intensity of purpose that I admire......And it's going to translate into some excellent reviews for the list in September and early October. I'm sure of it.<<< Heck, I will see to it that I get y'all worked up into a review-writing mode after my near "festival weekend" of three Lucy shows pretty much all to myself! Only nine days away now! It's already doing wonders for easing the inevitable pain of summer's end. Now just wondering who will be accompanying her at the Saturday night show....John Gorka appears to have skipped town that weekend 'cuz Musi-Cal has him doing a lone gig in Montana Friday Night. Will he fly back home to Minneapolis/St. Paul or is he on some personal driving vacation to the mountains with a gig on the side? In other matters, I believe I'd heard that Duke Levine was going over with her for some of her over-the-pond gigs---I didn't dream that did I? If that is the case maybe he'll be with her for the 14th in Minneapolis as well. I do expect the Friday and Sunday shows to be 'solo' Lucy. I hope the pain is subsiding!! Who is going to the Zoo in Bridgeport, CT on Sept 7th? I just ordered my ticket and was wondering what time to arrive and what to bring(blanket, chair or festival seat). Benay....I hear they have mass transit in the UK(No More Excuses!!) Donna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 19:46:07 -0400 From: bbubar@hearst.com Subject: [lucy-list] the Beardsley Zoo's unfairness... Well, of course I'll be there at the zoo...and I just looked on their website and did not find an answer to your question about what to bring, Donna. I DID, however, find the following: - ------------ Alice Peacock opening for Lucy Kaplansky. Held outdoors at the Zoo's Peacock Pavilion and picnic grove (or indoors in the Victorian Carousel Museum if inclement weather). Gates open at 6 p.m. for dinner, which people may bring to the Zoo or purchase from the Zoo's Peacock Cafi. - ------------ I am shocked...shocked! Alice Peacock is only the OPENER, yet they give her name to the ENTIRE pavilion and cafe? Giving Lucy NOTHING? How can they justify this travesty? We must protest! We must revolt! Benay now bent on finding some very cute little furry creature (NOT a bug!) at the zoo and renaming it the Kaplansky so that Lucy will get her due at the zoo :-) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 19:52:30 EDT From: Fantine729@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] the Beardsley Zoo's unfairness... I went to see EFO and The Kennedys at the zoo last year. It's a nice little amphitheaterlike outdoor setting, with a few scattered picnic tables. Blankets, chairs and/or festival chairs would all be quite appropriate. I don't think there are any hard-and-fast chair height rules, but I seem to remember that people with high-backed were quite courteous and didn't block folks in lower seats. The Peacock Pavilion is quite appropriately named as, during Pete and Maura's set last year, a peacock strolled on down to the stage, and flew upwards, alighting onto the top of the pavilion, strutting up and down for part of the set before moving on. I still have a feather from him in my pick case. Unfortunately, I will not be there, as I have a wedding to attend (though the wedding is of a very avid Lucy fan.....there's my Lucy content :-). Peace, Sheila ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 23:55:14 -0400 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] the zoo...and kaplanskies (lower case) Thanks for all the Beardsley Zoo info, Sheila. As for the peacock part: > The Peacock Pavilion is quite appropriately named as, during Pete and Maura's > set last year, a peacock strolled on down to the stage, and flew upwards, > alighting onto the top of the pavilion, strutting up and down for part of the > set before moving on. I still have a feather from him in my pick case. Well, I will concede, then...they can keep the Peacock Pavilion as the Peacock Pavilion. But, I, for one, will be loudly announcing my intention to buy my dinner at the Kaplansky Cafe (see, it even alliterates better!). And if the peacock himself (yes, peacocks ARE always male, as a patient friend had to remind me the last time I saw one at a zoo and was ready to be aghast at the sexist assumption...otherwise they are peaHENS) should alight on the pavilion, I will admire him with everyone else, but then I will say, with feeling, "And aren't the little kaplanskies adorable?" Incidentally...a kaplansky, I have decided (and this is NOT an "if Lucy were an animal, what animal would she be?" sort of thing, because I can't answer it for myself and I sure wouldn't presume to answer it for Lucy...this is just what I think of when I envision an animal called a kaplansky), should be somewhat larger than a gerbil but smaller than a cat. Probably an herbivore. Extremely soft, with fur that's a little bit springy to the touch. Independent, yet gentle and easily tamed...although not necessarily recommended as a household pet, as it doesn't adapt well to too much confinement. Extremely social; tends to be found in groups. Very intelligent...vocal and communicative, but not overly loud...makes a soothing little churr-churring noise. A kaplansky should be an animal well recognized and well loved by all (possibly, in fact, the subject of a number of extremely popular children's books starring a friendly kaplansky named, say, Katie...yes, it ought to be Katie the Kaplansky, because alliteration is extremely desirable for animal characters in children's books). Overall, the kaplansky ought to be such a well recognized and well loved creature that they could name...um...zoo structures after it. See, THEN if the Beardsley Zoo happened to get a singer named Alice Peacock to open for a singer named Lucy Kaplansky, it would all work out evenly... Did I mention it's been a long week? It's been a long week...and it's only the end of Wednesday. I also looked up "alliteration"--it means neighboring words having the same initial consonant sound, not necessarily (as I had thought) the same letter. So a "k" can alliterate with a hard "c". There is no end to the things one learns on the lucy list! Just two questions remain: 1. What do you call a group of (lower case) kaplanskies? I gather than they're mammals so they wouldn't be a clutch? Maybe a klatch? 2. Is there a lucy fan/recombinant DNA specialist on the list who can build us some? (Or if Libby knows anything about alife, maybe she can concoct some virtual kaplanskies?)
