What I wanted to know is if anybody can reccommend any good GENERAL folk music groups, not ones that are performer-specific like the lucy-list. I have just discovered (I know, I am way behind the times now) streaming folk music net radio and would like a forum to discuss some of the newer (and older) performers I've heard. rick Yahoo! I think they were starting a message board like that. rpniew wrote: I enjoy being a part of this list, as well as one for Anne Hills and Steve Goodman. Great news for us here in the Corn Belt. I just wrote a couple of week ago to Lucy's management company to beg for another appearance here. I'm sure today's news is just a happy coincidence. ;) If you're in the area, the Shop is a great place for an artist such as Lucy. It's located in the Memorial Union at Iowa State University (it used to , literally, be the Union's maintenance shop before it was turned into a bar and club). As an undergrad at Iowa State, I saw some great jazz there -- Pat Metheny, Dexter Gordon, Jack DeJohnette. In later years, it was more of a blues club. The past 5-6 years or so, singer-songwriter's been the speciality. I was last there about three years ago to see a wonderful evening with Richard Thompson. The bad news is that I teach a class on Tuesday nights. The good news for my students is it looks like they'll be getting the night off from class... :) Brian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 20:09:32 -0400 From: Phil Kalina <76106.566@compuserve.com> Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Seeking good GENERAL folk music groups (was: A question) At 25 Jul 2002 12:00:38 -0700 (pdt), rick wrote: > ... > What I wanted to know is if anybody can reccommend any good > GENERAL folk music groups, not ones that are performer- > specific like the lucy-list. > ... Definitely! I recommend Alan Rowoth's folkmusic list-serv. It's moderated so traffic is low but informative. It was through the folkmusic list-serv that I first learned about Lucy Kaplansky, way back in 1996. Go to http://grassyhill.org/mailman/listinfo/folkmusic for more information. The front cover has "To Tom, Best wishes! Lucy Kaplansky". I am looking to trade just the cover for an unsigned copy. Condition is excellent. I mistakenly had a friend's copy signed. If you have one with "To Nancy....now that would be even better.
