Last week's "Weekend Edition Saturday" music segment was much more impressive than this week's. Last week, Scott Simon of National Public Radio interviewed our hero, Lucy. This week NPR just aired a story on Carla the singing parrot and her new record, "I'm a Green Chicken." As there's a tiny chance you're serious, the parrot story is at http://www.npr.org/programs/wesat/features/2002/jul/parrot/ and the (just terrible!!) recording of "I'm a Green Chicken" is at http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/wesat/20020720_wesat_green_chicken.ram er, enjoy !?! Phil P.S. The Lucy interview is also still online at http://www.npr.org/programs/wesat/features/2002/jul/kaplansky/ And "Goodnight", which started all this, is at http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/wesat/20020713.wesat.lkaplansky.02.ram At 20 Jul 2002 09:54:02 -0500 (cdt), Gina wrote: > > Coool! But, then I realized, animal lover that I am, I might just want to hear this parrot sing. I mean if he made NPR... But, I have to admit, sometimes I wonder about myself. I was at a coffeehouse and they had Dan the Dog singing with his owner. It was just a guy, a guitar and a great dog that howled in this particular way that made me laugh so hard my sides hurt. Then the dog came over, sat on my foot and relished in my petting him. For me, it was a near perfect moment - laughing endorphins and dog affection. So, thanks for the URL, Phil. *wonders if Phil would like my leg pulling as much as Dan liked my ear scratching* Gina P.S. There are some people on this list who would be interested in singing cows too. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phil Kalina" <76106.566@compuserve.com> To: "lucy list" Sent: Saturday, July 20, 2002 12:51 PM Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Carla, the singing parrot > You're pulling my leg, right? > > As there's a tiny chance you're serious, the parrot story is at > http://www.npr.org/programs/wesat/features/2002/jul/parrot/ > and the (just terrible!!) recording of "I'm a Green Chicken" is at > http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/wesat/20020720_wesat_green_chicken.ram > > er, enjoy !?! > > Phil > > > P.S. Just back from Freeport ME, and Lucy Kaplansky. Setlist: He Still thinks I Care One Good Reason Don't mind me Broken THings 10 Year Night Scorpion End of the Day Peace, Love and understanding This is Home Land of the Living ABC song [Irving Kaplansky] Written on the Back of his hand Turn the Lights back on Someday Soon? A judy Collins' song by Ian Tyson Goodnight, Goodnight By Way of Sorrow ENCORE: It ain't me babe What can I say? She was wonderful as usual. This was a free concert of a series sponsored by LL Bean, and radio Station, a newspaper, and a tv station. On the lawn right by LL Bean flagship store. She wore her leather jacket and faded blue jeans She asked how long the store stays open. ANSWER: It never closes. Open 24 hrs a day. Well, except for hurricanes and such. Really! She mentioned about NPR, and finding out her album was #1 (ESD) & #12 (10YN) on Amazon She spoke about what true love was, and gave the example when a "water bug with wings" came into her apartment. She ran into the other room while Richard disposed of it with the vacuum cleaner. No complaints from him showed true love. And there was a 2-3 yrs old boy (named simon) with a fake electric guitar who was playing "air-guitar" while Lucy was playing. I truly wished I has a picture for you, it was both funny and cute. Lucy said it was the sweetest(As memory serves) thing she ever saw at her concert. And the banana man was there. Yes, the man who last year asked Lucy to sign a banana attended the concert. Since this was free, I showed up a couple hours early, and was able to hear the sound check. That was fun. I thanked lucy for playing three times north of Boston in the last 7 months. And I was able to do all this without making an idiot out of myself! No babbling! ;) During land of the living a hush fell over the crowd that carried even to the small children. This is home is a GREAT song. Even though I am not a mathematician, I couldn't help but give some applause for Mr kaplansky when lucy was explaining the ABC song and said her father was one. So have fun at FRFF, I will stay here, (because I can't afford to go). But I will be seeing Natalie MacMaster nearby. Bill ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 02:04:35 -0400 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] Freeport...and Dave Carter Thanks for the Freeport report, Bill, complete with set list...sounds like that show was a good one (yes, aren't they all?). That kid playing air guitar must have been hysterical! That report was an especially good thing to be able to come home and read tonight, as I am still being sad about Dave Carter (it's come up on all the other lists I'm on, so most of you probably know already that he died Friday of a heart attack...while I can find no official notice and would LOVE to be "set straight" and told that this was merely an unfortunate rumor, it has the unhappy ring of truth). I never claimed to be one of the biggest Dave and Tracy fans, but I own their CDs and always have looked forward to seeing them since I first saw them two years ago at Falcon Ridge, and with Dave Carter gone, Falcon Ridge is not going to be the same. It will still be good, and I'm still psyched about it...but it won't be quite the same. And I'm hoping tonight that Lucy and the Nields and Eddie from Ohio and Kris Delmhorst and all the other artists who are going to be at Falcon Ridge...and also those who won't be there this year but who are certainly elsewhere and much appreciated by many of us on this list (Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, John Gorka, Susan Werner, etc.) are safe and well and taking good care of themselves. The folk world is larger than one might think, but still not THAT large, and the loss of Dave Carter is a big one. His music has a life of its own, of course, and thank goodness that will remain. But we need all the others, THEMSELVES, to stay with us and keep sharing their gifts with us for a long, long time.
