That review was soooo much fun to read. New Bedford was FUN FUN FUN. I will write about it when I get home tonight. It was a loooong drive home last night... I drove from New Bedford to just over the border into Maryland from Delaware... stopped in a hotel... slept 3 hours... got to work at 9:30.... and thought it was totally worth it all!!! Yes, we'll definitely need to hook up sometime at Falcon Ridge! I'm not sure how long they keep stuff around. Here's the URL: http://www.npr.org/programs/wesat/features/2002/jul/kaplansky/index.html One thing that struck me about the interview was Scott Simon calling Lucy by her first name at one point. I haven't listened to _that_ many interviews that Scott Simon has done, but I don't ever remember him calling someone by their first name... It's great to hear the show reviews and festival reports. We don't get many decent concerts here in Central Kansas, so I appreciate the concert experience vicariously through all you lucky folks in better music areas. - -- Matt Pankratz http://www.mattyp.net Gina said: > Dierk! Well my Lucy-filled week has sadly come to an end. Nothing I love more than seeing Lucy 4 days in a 7 day period! :) KOP has been thoroughly discussed already... Benay gave a great review of Westbury so I'll leave it at that--it was amazing...Lucy sounded absolutely fantastic and blew people away. The guy in front of me was wiping away tears during LOTL and even my Dad was amazed by her. And I finally got to meet Benay :) New Bedford was SOOOOO much fun...saw lots of people from the list didn't talk to many though. All day long we had the updates from Rick as to how the Amazon sales rank was climbing---very exciting!! I love the workshop setting at this festival, you never know what songs you'll hear come out. Libby has the actual setlists but here's what i remember. Saturday - ------- Not a dry eye in the House and songs that touch your heart - -Loch Lomand - -Speaking with the Angel (with Richard) I Love the ground whereon he walks-how women sing about love - -I Had Something - -Water is Wide (with Susan Werner) - -Bye Bye Love (all) Sunday - ------- I'll Guard you with my right hand-songs of love and sacrifice - -Mary and the Soldier - -For Once in Your Life (since her mom had sacrificed so much for her) - -Goodnight Monday Night at Jacks Place--a singer/songwriter get together (a workshop for new songs) - -I Had Something - -This is Home Main Set (Not in order) - -Small Dark Movie - -Written On the Back of His Hand - -Don't Mind Me - -Turn the Lights Back on - -TYN - -LOTL - -Just You Tonight - -Someday Soon - -Broken Things - -Scorpion - -E: It Ain't Me Babe So much fun...i don't wanna go back to Kansas!!!!! It's great that so many people wrote to find out who was singing, "Goodnight"!! Do you really think Scott Simon was too focused on the clinical-psychologist-leaving-music angle? I don't think he was.(Benay and I are finally disagreeing on something about Lucy). It takes a lot of time and hard work to earn a doctorate(my husband is currently working on his). I sometimes think the angle isn't used as much as it should be. Lucy was a clinical psychologist and made a crucial decision to return to music full time!! It still amazes me.....just my opinion. My favorite part of the interview was the end....when Lucy said she would have to be dragged away kicking and screaming if she retired from music again!! You're right Benay...we would all be kicking and screaming. Does anyone know if Cliff Eberhardt has ever recorded Goodnight himself? I dont see it on the track listings of any of his CDs on amazon.com (Lucy is still #3, I checked). I'd be curious to hear it, if it exists. Hey, do people here have any thoughts on the new Pieta Brown (daughter of Greg) CD? I'd be happy to burn a copy (of just this one song) for anyone who wants to hear it. I didn't get to see Lucy as often as I would have liked this weekend at New Bedford, as it seemed she was frequently someplace opposite The Kennedys, and, well, there are always difficult decisions to be made! I don't think he was.(Benay and I are finally disagreeing on something about Lucy). Absolutely, a doctorate takes a huge amount of work and it is an incredibly neat thing that Lucy did that...and then made the career switch on top of it all (it still sends shivers down my spine to think I would likely never have heard OF her, let alone heard her sing, had she NOT come back to music...my whole life would be different, and much less rich!). And especially coming from a family of major career switchers (my father's a veterinarian turned car salesman turned embroiderer!), I can relate in some ways to how hard that big a shift must have been. In no way was I trying to lessen the importance of Lucy's psychologist past or say I was not interested just because I knew about it already. And I really enjoyed the whole interview too...I wouldn't have wanted to cut any of it out as irrelevant or boring. I guess maybe I just would have liked the interview to be LONGER, so they could have talked more about other things as well, because Lucy is indeed a singer-turned-psychologist- turned-singer and that's NEAT, but she's a lot *more than that too. But hey, I'll take what I can get. And if that interview seems to have put Lucy way up there in the Amazon rankings, then great----more power to her! Incidentally, I bet we could find more things to disagree on about Lucy if we tried, Donna, and probably already have---I mean, we may love the same lines of WOTBOHH, from "when the stars come out" onward, but I don't know if you would be as completely happy as I would at my hypothetical concert in which Lucy would just sing that song 15 times in a row! :-) Benay ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 18:04:37 -0500 From: "Richard Hill" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] the Pieta question Jess wondered: <> Well, um yes, since you asked. I caught Pieta Brown here at our Highdive about a month ago, along with the World's Greatest Sideman, Bo Ramsey. Pieta is a very cute young woman, and I REALLY wanted to like her material. Unfortunately, not even Bo Ramsey could save the evening. There is a "down sameness" to most of her songs, plus we couldn't understand anything she was saying between songs. I'm always annoyed if people are chatting away while a performer is doing his/her thing on stage. Hate to say it, but Pieta's performance was so dreary that I found myself wandering into conversation, too. Just my take, and it's not really of the CD, but rather a performance, but there you are. Somebody have the CD? Is it worth checking out anyway? ~Richard ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 20:44:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Gina Subject: Re: [lucy-list] NPR, Goodnight "The Long Road" is indeed out of print and Cliff does sell copies. But, I saw one on Ebay yesterday and it was cheap. It's a good album and his version of "Good Night" is wonderful, of course. I know it's not a cool thing to say to this list, but I like it even better than Lucy's version. I spent over $20 for my copy of "The Long Road" which was right before the copies were being made. I think yesterday the Ebay one was around $6-7. Cliff selling the copies lessened the demand for the original. I had seen them up in the $30-40 range at one time. I know it's not a cool > thing to say to this list, but I like it even better than Lucy's version. Sacrilege! No, just kidding, really! :-) Even I, Benay "Lucy-sings-everything-in-the- most-perfect-way-anyone-could-possibly-ever-sing-it" Bubar, think that the only truly not cool thing to say on this list (aside from personal attacks, of which I've found this list in general to be refreshingly devoid) would be "I hate Lucy" (and one would really have to wonder why anybody who hated Lucy would BE on this list in the first place!). Somehow this made me think of when I first heard Richard Shindell's version of Calling the Moon and liked it better than Dar's even though at the time I considered myself much more of a Dar fan than a Richard fan. I was suffused with guilt---how could I call myself a true Dar fan and not prefer Dar's version, especially in this case because it was HER song?---and weeks later I admitted my shameful preference to another avid Dar fan, prepared to be admonished. The response I got (even though my friend liked Dar's version better) was something like, "Yeah...so?" I still really like Dar...but I still like Richard's version of Calling the Moon better than hers, and I've realized both those things can be true at the same time and not make me a bad Dar fan! (If I had my own Lucy-related example of this sort of thing, I would've used it, but I haven't found one yet...that doesn't mean I never will, and I'll still love Lucy even if I do.)
