Lucy, bragging that she was wearing her "summer colors," (yup, black leather jacket, dark brown leather pants as per usual!) shared the bill with Susan Werner and Toshi Reagon---Susan and Toshi did their sets first, and Lucy was last. I was happy about the order because in my book they were saving the best for last and I liked it that way...but Lucy's set did seem way too short...shorter than the other two, I thought. The set list for Lucy: Written on the Back of His Hand Scorpion I Had Something Ten Year Night (preceded by The Bug Story, my favorite intro now for obvious reasons..and no, Sharon, I have not in fact seen any waterbugs at home tonight YET, momentarily disproving my theory that the waterbugs KNOW when I've gone to see Lucy and come out specifically at those times...or perhaps tonight's just a single exception to the rule!) Don't Mind Me Land of the Living (which received long, LONG applause today...10 months later, as it happens...) By Way of Sorrow Encores: This Is Home (she said the hardest part was singing it without getting choked up...and it is impossible to LISTEN to without getting choked up!) The Water Is Wide (with Susan Werner) That last one deserves special mention...Toshi Reagon had left by that time, but Lucy brought Susan out to sing it with her. Lucy took the first verse with some harmony from Susan, Susan took the second one with some harmony from Lucy, and after that they sang together in harmony for the last couple of verses. I had been wondering how Lucy's and Susan's voices would sound together (they may have sung together before, but not that I'd seen), and the answer was...amazingly beautiful. I'd heard The Water Is Wide many times before and found it pleasant but seldom awe-inspiring...well, THIS version was awe-inspiring! They just nailed it, every note...and I forgot that I'd been a little sad about Lucy's set being short, because it would have been worth going to the show just to hear the two of them do that song. The best onstage comment of the night, besides Lucy's discussing her "summer colors," came from Susan Werner, who, near the end of her set, explained what was coming up next: "Toshi's going to make your world..." (here she held one hand palm up and then turned it dramatically upside down)..."and then Lucy will come help you make sense of what happened!" (Susan was very funny...she also did an extended riff on how she wasn't revealing much personal information because she wanted to be a blank slate for us to project our desires onto. Except at one point she said, "I will be what you need me to be," and I have to admit I couldn't resist thinking for a moment, "But I need you to be LUCY!" That's the down side of having three very talented and yet very different performers in one evening including one you really like and one you really LOVE. I'm still warming up to Toshi Reagon---have only seen her twice--- but I thoroughly enjoy Susan Werner and was wanting to hear more from her---and at the same time NOT wanting her to do more because the time she was playing was, mostly, time that Lucy WASN'T playing and I wanted to hear as much of Lucy as possible.) Of course, even a little of Lucy goes a long way, and I will be happily seeing her again tomorrow for a 20-minute set (and maybe, with luck, more harmonies at the end!) in Westbury as part of Judy Collins's tour. In the meantime, off to bed, with the lovely sound of Lucy and Susan's version of The Water Is Wide echoing in my head...
