Cliff's version is incredible. I hope all you Lucy fans experience Cliff at some point too. Many of you have with the "Winter's Night" concerts. Go to his solo concerts. They are wonderful. By now, Lucy's probably had it all explained to her, but for any non-locals who might have been visiting Annapolis tonight for her show, you might have missed a true highlight of the evening. Clearly not too familiar with Annapolis, Lucy admitted so, but made a lovely attempt to comment that it is "near an ocean. . . (and). . . is apparently a big sailing destination." Well, sort of. It is near an ocean, but the Chesapeake Bay is the bigger attraction to sailors. . .and boaters. . . and yes, there IS a distinction, but poor Lucy was not aware of it and that lack of awareness led her to make an off-hand comment that she could not possibly have known was so appropriate to the topic. In short, the whole moment exemplified what it is that I love about Lucy. First, not everyone here is visiting. Although it's a big tourist spot, many people live here, and many of them fall into one of two categories: Hatfields or McCoys...er..sailors or boaters. It's best for me not to perpetuate any of the stereotypes of either group, because...well..because I gotta live here. Basically, sailors sail and boaters boat. I guess the most diplomatic way to point out the source of conflict (and there is much) between the groups is . . . speed. Suffice it to say that in most cases, a sailor does not cotton to being labelled a boater and vice versa. Again, Lucy had no way of knowing what she was stepping into when she asked if there were a lot of sailors in the audience. Someone shouted the correction, "Boaters," and she continued (slightly confused), "Oh, boaters...sorry ." Then she mentioned her admiration for those who could sail because she didn't think she would be good at sailing, and again she was corrected, "Boating." She replied, and this is the innocent comment that my friend and I found precious, "Oh, boats! Oh, I can row a boat." If there had been more Irish whiskey flowing, a genuine brawl might have erupted. But this was a polite group, and anyone who found it amusing or insulting just let it go. As I said, I'm sure by now she's been enlightened on the "boats" these people referred to. Kinda like me telling a NASCAR crowd, "Oh, I can drive a stick shift." I have to admit to being surprised there were boaters in the audience, or sailors for that matter -- it was a beautiful night for being out on the water. Maybe next time she's in town (if a boater hasn't shuttled her off to a remote island in the Chesapeake by now), some hospitable sailors and boaters can show her the town ...or the shoreline...from their respective views. Both can be lots of fun. Sorry not to have a setlist or much to say about the performance, etc. Just felt like enjoying the evening and letting others take care of that. It was quite enjoyable, as always. Smooth sailing, boating, rowing, or floating to all....Karen ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V4 #138 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
