What a great time!! It started off in Williamsburg, as it usually does for me... when I said... hmmmmmm.... 6 hours? Not bad! I drove up to DC with a load of stuff to go into storage, dropped the stuff off, picked up friend Kate, and together we drove up to PA. There we found my friend and former roommate Sharon and headed up to Bethlehem. Both Kate and Sharon were Lucy virgins and truly excited about the show. We arrived early, not knowing how long the drive would take us, what the venue was like, or when the doors opened. Ran into Lucy ahead of time, shocked her (again) by the distance we covered, and delivered brownies... and then were off to have a fabulous dinner at a nearby Indian restaurant. Mmmmm... I love curry.... :) Just digressing from the Lucy track for a minute... I do believe that it was some of the finest Indian food I've ever eaten. Yay for Bethlehem for that one! Anyway... we got back to Godfrey Daniels and went in for the show. When I made the reservations, I didn't realize it was such a teeny place. It was great. Really intimate... almost like you were at a house concert. I loved it. Ran into Lindsey (lucy-list lurker... come out, come out, wherever you are!)... and it was a strange little Williamsburg reunion, since Lindsey, Kate, Sharon, and I all knew each other from William and Mary. She was quite surprised to see us there... for about 3 seconds... when she remembered my driving track record. Liz Queler opened and got a really good response. She's got a beautiful voice... and her music is very relaxing. It's one of those things that seems to me to be a purposeful understatement... which in turn makes it stand out. I hope that makes sense! Anyway... I enjoyed. She mentioned that this show was rescheduled from 9/14 when, obviously, neither she nor Lucy were able to make it out of Manhattan. The running joke all night was that they had to finish before the rock band next door started at 10:30. In truth... I'm not sure if it was a joke or not! But we kept taunting them on... screw the band next door... keep playing! It was a great, receptive crowd... and well... that made for a lot of great Lucy-energy. :) Setlist with comments.... * He Thinks I Still Care -- I love this song... but I don't get it.... people laugh at it! Well not all the time... in NC they didn't... in Ashland, VA they didn't... but in Vienna, VA they did and then in Bethlehem they did... It's not funny, IMO... it's really sad... Any reactions? * One Good Reason Lucy's comment, then, saying... "Really... the sadder the song, the better I feel." * Don't Mind Me * I Had Something --- wow... one of the new ones... and it was great. All I can say is WOW. * Ten Year Night * Secret Journey * Gulty As Sin * Loch Lomond -- Lucy made this one into a sing-a-long... and I think we were all glad she did. We sang... and there were *harmonies* coming from the audience... and it was just beautiful. She mentioned between verses how beautiful it was... and that we were going to make her cry! And it really was beautiful. It made ME cry!! :) - --- 15 minute break --- * Mary and the Soldier * Scorpion * End of the Day So... right before end of the day, Lucy mentioned that the first two songs were her "love medley." She said that they were the love medley... but that now she was gonna play another one (EOTD), and "the medley is over!" Then... right after EOTD... she mentioned that she had been thinking the strangest thing during the love medley... about how the other night there was this REALLY BIG BUG in their apartment... and how gallant Rick had been to kill it... And that if he hadn't been there, she'd have probably gone to a hotel for the night... or moved out! It was a silly little random story.... :) * This is Home -- the other new one... and it's just amazing... Lots of tears in the audience. Beautiful. * Land of the Living... and the crying continued. OK... so maybe I was the only one crying... LOL... What with finishing my masters, closing my piano studio, getting a new job, and moving... all at the same time... I've been a teensy bit emotional lately. *grin* :) But anyway... thru my drippy eyes, it looked like there were a lot of others, too! * Hot Burrito #1 * Dad's ABC Song * Written On the Back of His Hand * Someday Soon -- I think that's the title. I've heard her do this cover before... Lucy mentioned how she'd recently played with Judy Collins and how it was like a dream come true as she'd spent soooo many hours as a teenager listening to Judy's albums in her bedroom. So... she did this one as a Judy tribute. * By Way Of Sorrow -- Liz Queler joined her for harmonies and it was wonderful.... Encore -- * Guenivere I think she might have done another encore for us, except that we _were_ starting to hear the thump-thump of bass and drums from next door... and well... we then dispersed for autographs and chatter and the post-show energy-fest. :) Kate and Sharon were both dully impressed... and commented that they'd definitely be back to see Lucy again... and that _now_ they understood my compulsion to drive up and down the east coast to see her... *grin* We listened to Lucy WFUV interviews I have on tape on the way back to Sharon's where we crashed for the night... And then... Kate and I were up at 5 a.m.... and back to DC... since I had to be back down to Virginia by 1 p.m..... to meet some people at the recording studio. Soooooo... it was truly a quick fly-by of a trip... but a memorable one, indeed. Ahhhhh.... a teriffic Lucy show... 2 new Lucy converts... a super road trip.... I do believe my work was dully done. :) Be well, all! -- Libby ===== libbywiebel@yahoo.com http://www.libbywiebel.com "She's gonna hit the ground running from this dead end street, saved by the power of her own two feet..." - Lucy Kaplansky - -------- Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V4 #125 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
