First they played Broken Things off of Every Single Day, and then Lucy talked to Claudia Marshall about Jennifer Kimball singing backup on that song...then they discussed backup singing in general. Lucy talked about singing with Richard Shindell and how she hadn't known him before she sangon Sparrow's Point with him...they played Memory of You and Lucy talked about how she'd made something up for the song and it turned out that while she was singing, they'd just prayed she wouldn't stop because they loved it and that was what they ended up using (she said she was thinking of music from Rosemary's Baby at the time she was singing that particular part...and that you never know where the inspiration will come from). They talked about Lucy's inspirations for harmony singing, and she mentioned the Eagles and the Beatles and especially the Roches...and they played Hammond Song by the Roches, with Lucy talking about how she loved the song because the Roches did all different things rather than just straightforward harmonizing. She said that's why she thinks people like what she does particularly, because in backup singing you have to be willing to play and "jump off a cliff" and it's more fun to be allowed to do your own thing. They talked about Lucy's singing on Bryan Ferry's new album and played just a little of a song from it called San Simeon, with Lucy speaking the lyrics as Bryan Ferry was singing them (though unfortunately, I couldn't hear Lucy well because of static on my radio). It was the first time Lucy had seen the album, with her name on it (it isn't out yet), and she was excited. They talked about Cry Cry Cry and played part of Memphis as done by Cliff Eberhardt and then the same part as done by Cry Cry Cry, and Lucy said she didn't even know where some of the harmonies they did had come from...it was like she'd made up another melody. Finally, they discussed Northern Cross and how they'd put it together line by line, and they played Northern Cross off of Cry Cry Cry. Anyway, most of you who wanted to listen were probably listening on the radio or streaming it anyway, but I just thought I'd give a quick summation for anyone who missed it, as I would have wanted if I hadn't heard it. Sorry it's not written better, but I'm rushing at work and must get back to more official duties! Lucy on WFUV was a nice way to start the morning, though...
