The theater was relatively small, maybe only a couple of hundred seats, and if it wasn't completely full (it DID seem like a rather obscure location), it was close. They had Lucy's name on a big sign at the college entrance, and then there was a nice display of her biography as you walked into the building entrance, and a program calling her "the most engaging Singer/Songwriter on today's acoustic scene" (odd capitalization aside, my sentiments exactly!) It was kind of nice to see this not-well-known place really treating Lucy's appearance as a big deal. Lucy came out wearing her black leather jacket...and, as she confirmed during the show, she was debuting a NEW pair of brown leather pants...much darker than the other brown ones. (They were a hit.) She was accompanied for this show by Zev Katz on bass and Duke Levine on guitar---,a configuration I hadn't seen before, but one that worked incredibly well...adding to Lucy's voice without overpowering it. There was no opening act, which meant that Lucy was able to do two sets, 23 songs total! It wasn't quite my perfect set list (my perfect set list would have included If You Could See and maybe Still Life too), but it was pretty close: He Thinks I Still Care End of the Day Written on the Back of His Hand Don't Mind Me The Tide (This one seems be working its way into Lucy's sets more often these days, which pleases me---I'd been thinking of it a lot recently. Lucy looked pensive for a moment after singing it and remarked that she'd had a lot of therapy since she'd written it and "things are better now." This version was apparently the first time it had been done with the band, or at least THIS band.) Ten Year Night Love Song New York (Lucy didn't name it, but she asked if anyone knew who had written it...nobody did...it was Bill Morrissey. I knew I'd heard it before, though I couldn't have placed it. It wasn't one that would have made me think, "Lucy should sing that!" but in hearing her sing it, I absolutely thought it was a great addition to her reportoire. It was notable in that it was the first love song originally from a male perspective that I'd heard Lucy sing WITHOUT changing the gender...it was clearly about a woman, and couldn't have been otherwise. And it worked absolutely fine that way.) What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding Loch Lomond (preceded by Scotland story...Lucy also remarked that if she knew of a about Paramus, she would have learned it...nobody could think of one...Lucy said maybe the theme from "The Sopranos" would qualify and proceeded to think for a moment and try to sing a couple of bars... something like "I woke up this morning and I bought a gun" and I didn't know whether that was the actual theme because I haven't seen the show.) This Is Mine (Intermission) More Than This (no intro) One Good Reason Guilty As Sin Nowhere Land of the Living Hot Burrito #1 On An Asteroid With You (the swinging version with Lucy hamming it up sans guitar) Five In the Morning Hole in My Head Turn the Lights Back On Scorpion Encores: Every Single Day Broken Things So that's the report...in short, it was a Lucy show well worth the trip to Paramus, even with getting somewhat lost on the way!
