Essentially the game is this. Pick 8-12 contemporary folk acts (however you define THAT!) and a venue (optional) for the festival of your dreams. Actually "in your dreams" is probably the most that will come of it but still this exercise holds the potential to highlight other people's favorite performers that we might otherwise miss over on Stage 3 while we are over at Stage 2 making small talk with our friends. The guidelines are simply: 1) The act must consist of living artists 2) The act must be currently performing (not retired from public performance...actually available, and for less than $$$$$) 3) Try to achieve a mix of both male and female artists. As I said, who would fit in at a "folk" festival is up to you! And the idea here is less to give us a list of your "all-time favorites" than to clue the rest of us into who you think are the most happening live "folk" acts touring this summer. Example: 1) Lucy Kaplansky with her full Emelin Band (Ben Butler, Ben Wittman, Ben-Zev Katz) 2) Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer 3) Slaid Cleaves and his "Broke Down" trio 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10 You get the idea. I'm at work and can't finish my list. I've daydreamed enough already! I've also gone out on a limb and bought some things just from what I read in a newspaper article about someone ... the latest being jazz singer Patricia Barber. Anybody else have a good experience taking a leap of faith like that? Deb ===== You can take the rock band away from the girl and think you've tamed her. But, she'll just pick up an acoustic, give you that innocent little girl grin, quietly laugh and say? "Nevah!" Yahoo! Lucy, of course. But I can't pick between Lucy solo, Lucy with Ben Wittman/Zev Katz, and Lucy with Duke Levine...so she will simply have to do three sets. 2. Dar Williams 3. Nerissa and Katryna Nields 4. Richard Shindell 5. Susan Werner 6. John Gorka 7. Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer 8. Kris Delmhorst 9. Eddie from Ohio 10. Buddy and Julie Miller 11. Chris & Meredith Thompson 12. Judy Collins (so she and Lucy can sing together again! Lucy must sing with her on everything) And everyone within the above list who HAS sung with or played with anyone else on the list (Lucy/Richard/Dar and combinations thereof, Lucy/John, Nields/Dar, Dar/Kris Delmhorst, etc.) must also do so for purposes of this festival. In cases where Lucy has covered other artists' songs (Julie Miller, Buddy Miller, Nields, Richard Shindell), Lucy gets to sing lead on them rather than having the original artists do it...though she can just do harmonies on the ones she hasn't yet specifically covered. I've been mainly a lurker on the Lucy List- for the same reason I lurk on many other lists- to keep track of your opinions on other artists. I like Lucy's music, but I'm not really an avid fan. Having said that, it's probably no surprise that my "In Your Dreams Folk Festival" is likely to include some names never seen here before. But that's a good thing- right? The whole idea is to learn about artists that might be missed through other channels. It might also be helpful to know that my perspective is that of a lifelong Southerner- something that seems to be pretty rare on this list So here goes: "O Brother What a Festival" or "Traditional Influences on Contemporary Folk" Robin and Linda Williams http://www.robinandlinda.com/ Carol Elizabeth Jones and James Leva http://www.jonesandleva.com/ Mountain Soul http://mountainsoul.cjb.net/ The Georgia Mudcats http://guitarauction.com/georgiamudcats.htm Robin Greenstein- one of only two Northeasterners in my festival. A New York singer/songwriter whose current project involves traditional folk songs. http://www.robingreenstein.com/ Kasper "Stranger" Malone (92 years old!) and Russell McClanahan- no recordings of Stranger that I know of. You'll just have to come down South and hear him in person. Here's some info from last year's Swannanoa Gathering Staff Bios: - ----------------------------------------- STRANGER MALONE & RUSSELL McCLANAHAN His name is Kasper Malone, but most folks call him Stranger.9 Born to a tobacco-farming family in McCracken County, Kentucky in 1910, Malone struck out on his own at age 15 to become a musician. One of his many stops was Rome, GA, where he played saxophone for silent films. While there, he met and recorded with Lowe Stokes, Clayton McMichen, Riley Puckett, and the Skillet Lickers. After that, he headed west and played on many of the early radio shows across the midwest. Following years spent performing across the US and in Germany, Stranger returned to settle in Rome, GA, where he is still active promoting old-time music to younger generations and playing clarinet, guitar, and string bass. With a flat-picking background influenced by Norman Blake and Doc Watson, Russell McClanahan has played music all over the world from Ireland, to Denmark, to Saudi Arabia, and throughout the southeastern US. He spent three years performing in Northwest Georgia schools with James Bryan as the 3Blue Eyed Boys,2 and in 1996 he toured throughout Bosnia playing bluegrass, country and gospel for American and international troops. For the last four years he has been performing at southern festivals and in schools with Stranger Malone. - ---------------------------------------- Finally, someone who might still be a subscriber to this list: Martha Trachtenberg- she and Robin should be able to do some parkin' lot pickin'- since they both play the banjo http://www.momandpoprecords.com/abouttime.html - -- From the Georgia Pines, Steve Robertson ==================================== _________Fiddlin' Around____________ The Journal of American Roots Music on the web at http://www.starchart.com/ ==================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 May 2002 00:04:45 EDT From: Pfleary@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] other artists Been really big on Greg Brown in the past few months, becoming more familiar with his stuff, he's an amazing songwriter.
