Lucy kept saying how happy she was to be there--that the Barns is such a wonderful place, that Duke Levine is so amazing, and that she loves to play before crowds that are drinking. (Funny though, nobody picked up on Lucy's hint to bring her a scotch or Irish whiskey.) The program says the Barns of Wolf Trap seats 352. There were very few empty seats last night. I hadn't seen Lucy Kaplansky since October. She's freshened her show considerably--new stories based on her last UK trip, new math stories, and a few different songs. Duke Levine added a lot. It's as if he plays harmonies on his assortment of electric guitars, (He also played mandolin.) which is interesting because Lucy is so good at harmony. Loudon Wainwright III said it at McCabe's and Don McLean said it last night. He wasn't cranky BTW. OK, to be clear, it wasn't just Lucy. It was the Judy Collins Wildflowers tour, and Lucy was one of three musicians sharing the bill with Judy Collins (the others being Tom Rush and Richie Havens). The venue, NJPAC, was a gorgeous big theater, relatively new but quite elegant (and reasonable to reach by public transit, for any New Yorkers who want to know), and it was almost completely full---the main section and the three upper tiers. Judy Collins came out first and sang Both Sides Now and City of New Orleans. I had never seen her live before and had been a passive fan at best...oh, yes, Judy Collins, I know some of her songs...but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed actually hearing her perform. In the course of the evening---her main set came later---she ended up doing most of the songs that made her famous plus a few classics (Danny Boy, My Funny Valentine) and a couple of newer ones (an unusual inclusion was Sting's Fields of Gold) and was lovely and completely entertaining throughout. I really hadn't expected to like her as much as I did, so that was a pleasant surprise. Lucy came out after Judy's initial two songs...unfortunately, she was on the other side of the stage from where my seat was, but she was wearing her leather jacket and brown pants, and she sounded wonderful. She said she'd listened to Judy Collins a lot while growing up and was delighted to be there, and she looked it. She sang: The Angels Rejoiced Written on the Back of His Hand Ten Year Night Don't Mind Me Land of the Living (which got long, LONG applause) By Way of Sorrow During the course of Lucy's set, I realized I was pretty much the opposite of most of the people there, being a hard-core Lucy fan and not that aware of the other performers. Most everyone else was...well, let's say a little older...and hadn't heard Lucy before. So when Lucy said the things that people who know her music tend to clap for...like the "kitchen floor thing" and the mention of Cry Cry Cry...I clapped enthusiastically and then realized I was the only person clapping in my ENTIRE section of the room, and people were giving me funny looks. I ended up finding it kind of hysterical. Tom Rush and Richie Havens were next...they gave fine performances, but both of them went on much longer than Lucy had, so the intermission didn't start until 10. Because the theater required that the show end at 11, this meant that Judy Collins's main set was cut rather drastically short...very sad, because I could have stood to hear much more from her. But at the very end, all else was forgotten when Judy called all the others back onstage to sing "Amazing Grace" with her. It was the most stunning rendition of the song I think I've ever heard. Lucy only had the third verse by herself, but she harmonized for most of the rest, and hearing her voice blend with Judy Collins's voice...a combination that wouldn't have sprung instantly to mind as wonderful...well, it was just unbelievably gorgeous. I wish there were a recording; I would buy it in a second. I think it would have been worth the price of the ticket just for that song. Anyway, that's my report on the evening. Let me just say, for anyone who may be debating going to the future Wildflowers tour dates (I assume Lucy will be at the others, though I only see her listed for Westbury), wondering if it's worth it if you consider yourself mainly a Lucy fan (as I wondered myself)....GO!!! You won't regret it.
