I took my daughter, 11 years old at the time and not as heavily into mainstream pop as she is now. Meg had her own copy of "Cry, Cry, Cry" and had heard all of my Lucy CDs. She dearly loved "The Kid". Well, we met Lucy during the intermission. Lucy took a few minutes to speak to Meg, which made Meg an immediate hard core Lucy fan .... she'd never had the opportunity to meet an artist face-to-face since other concerts she had attended were large venues. During their conversation Lucy determined that Meg loved "The Kid". Of course Meg had to buy her own copy of "Ten Year Night" which Lucy autographed after the show. But the really nice thing was that the first song after intermission was "The Kid" during which Lucy looked Meg's way and smiled at her several times. Rick Litvin, Lucy's husband, was traveling with her at that time. He told me how pleased he was that Meg had asked Lucy to sing that song. It seems that "The Kid" had been a point of disagreement between Lucy and Rick, Rick thinking that she should include it in her shows and Lucy having doubts. If I'm not mistaken Lucy made that song a regular in her shows for a while after that. I say all this to make the point that Lucy seems to really care about her fans. From my perspective that cannot be said as strongly about some other artists. This is probably why she chose psychology initially. I think she genuinely is a very nice person and very appreciative of her fans in a special way. I believe Christine Lavin, known for doing manicures on fans during intermissions, is similar. However, I think you will find that many folk artists and some country music artists have a whole different approach to their "public" than other musicians. They are far more accessible to the "folk." It's quite nice. I had noticed from the start that she wasn't eating normally, and I was hoping that it was just her settling in, but after seeing various other things that worried me, I took her to the vet on Saturday, and it turned out that she had a chronic, progressive immune system disorder that attacked her teeth and gums and caused her great pain. It was a very serious problem, one that should have been picked up well before she was ever offered for adoption. To have any chance of a decent quality of life, she needed major surgery (potentially the removal of all her teeth) and intensive home care, and as a single and not wealthy person working full time, sometimes for long hours, I knew I wasn't going to be able to give her the level of care she would need. So this morning, I returned her to the vet who works with the organization from which I got her---now that they know about the problem, I can only hope they will help her (they are a no-kill rescue group, so it is her best chance) and find someone who can give her the care necessary. Giving her back was one of the hardest things I've ever done (and talk about a lousy way to spend one's birthday morning!), but I really didn't feel I had any choice---it was the best thing I could do for her, even though it made me feel awful. She was absolutely the dearest cat, the EXACT one I would have wanted if I could possibly have kept her, and I am heartbroken. But I know I did the only thing I could have done. Thanks, all, for having indulged me in giving her her moment of glory on the Lucy-list in the short time I had with her. I would have to say "yes" to that! :-) Dave. PS Wholesale requoting of previous posts has been getting a little out of hand of late.
