I've used a very old one -- Joni Mitchell's "For Free" -- for analysis purposes. I generally keep on the lookout for good, "deep" songs. The students act irritated when I do them, but they remember them. rick - --- Diane Mittler wrote: > I'd love to hear what specific music/ songs you're > using? All of them seemed to enjoy Lucy but not Lenny. I had a date leave me at a Lucy concert once, necessitating a $50 cab ride home because the public transportation had stopped running that late on a Sunday night. He spent the first act counting the number of people there and decided that Lucy was making too much money, by his estimation (he knew nothing about the business). He spent intermission complaining that the venue was trying to "milk" profits by making the intermission too long so they could sell us cake for $1 a slice (again, he knew nothing about the business). And when he started complaining, after the show, that Lucy was taking too long to come out (I had something for her), I told him to leave, thinking I would only have to take public transportation home (I didn't realize it had stopped running!). That was the second and LAST time I brought a date to any of these things, until very recently. My current boyfriend went out and bought all of The Nields', Dar's, and Lucy's CDs just because I mentioned liking them. He is now a huge fan (and seems to like me too) and has been to a few Nerissa and Katryna shows already! We haven't seen Lucy together yet, but, hopefully, soon! Maybe a Lucy show is a good way to gauge the potential-mate factor?? Glad you had a happy "ending"! A total JERK! I am a single male, heterosexual. I would never DREAM of abandoning a woman that way. I would LOVE to find a single woman with which whom we share musical tastes. Of course, I am also busy at the moment in town business and don't have time to date unless a woman would hit me over the head and drag me away. LOL I came to Lucy Through Dar Williams -> Cry Cry Cry. I am totally entranced with Lucy wonderful vocal talent, not to mention her songwriting ability. I live in northern NH, and had my first concert with her on Jan 11 2002 in a little church in tamworth NH. I believe she will be playing Portland ME in may, and look forward to Falcon Ridge. She's funny enough that the kids would shove aside any resentment at me pushing this "stuff" on them. I remember about 15 years ago, I made my students read "How Can I Keep From Singing?", the Pete Seeger biography. They hated it at the time; I was invited to their reunion last year and they all came up to me telling me how much they thought about the book and how they read about Pete in the newspapers from time to time. It takes a while to see if things work. rick - --- Gina wrote: > I go alone a lot of the time too. It's the song "The Wild Blue" about the Kamikaze pilots. You may know it already if you're a fan. If you do, you know that it is NOT a funny song. I recommend everyone here to go to her site and read the lyrics for this song. It is one amazing, true story. But, your kids need to be old enough for it. I remember a science teacher in the 7th or 8th grade reading to us from a book about Hiroshima. It was graphic detail about the atomic bomb - what people experienced when it went off. It was horrifying, but important. This man was such an amazing teacher. I really didn't understand how good he was until I got much older. I blossomed with his techniques and had no idea it was happening. I know that this is way off topic, but I would love to hear people's favorite teacher stories.
