(Giggle.) No, it's probably just Kristen and now me...but I loved your Lucy-the-cat story, Kristen, and I'm glad you shared it! I don't have a guitar, and I can't say whether MY Lucy the cat would be interested in it if I did...but she and I watched the tape of Lucy K's Early Show appearance this morning (thanks again, Timothy!) and my Lucy, normally very quiet, let out a pronounced meow in the middle of the song. So I think she's a fan. :-) Benay ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 2002 10:57:48 -0500 From: Rachel_Ladutke@aporter.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] feline Lucys We have four cats and two dogs, none named after any of the CRY3 group but all have full three names and among these are Harrison, Seeger, Lenono, Guthrie...and our last dog is Strummer Berrigan Jones (for Joe, Daniel and Mick). My brief sojourn was for seven years, in an inner city catholic junior high. I loved it while I did it, but have never been tempted to return... maybe it was that last year working for "the nun from hell" (but that's another story). In addition to being a big Lucy fan, my wife is a NYC school teacher. After a Lucy K. & Richard S. concert a few years ago, Lucy was signing CDs and asked my wife how to spell her name. When we told her, Lucy's jaw dropped and she said, "That's the same way my mom spells her name- I've never met anyone else who spells it that way!" (Okay fans, everyone knows Lucy's dad is Irving K. the math professor, but who can answer this trivia question- what's Lucy's mom's name? spelling counts!) Anyway Timothy, you asked to be talked out of going back to teaching... try subbing in a NYC inner-city middle school. My wife's M. S. has had metal detectors for years, but knives, razor blades and other weapons still make it into the building. And although the crack vials that used to cover the school yard seem to have gone out of fashion, violence has not. Teachers aren't just assaulted by students; sometimes parents also drop by to punch out teachers, administrators, and other people's children. A number of kids have their own probation officers, and a few have older siblings up on murder charges. This year, to improve the schools' image (or maybe his own) the Chancellor decided to 'solve' the problem by prohibiting suspensions city-wide. Now he's trumpeting the dramatic decrease in the number of suspensions as evidence of how he's making the schools safer. The truth is that district superintendents were instructed to deny all requests for suspensions, no matter how serious. It didn't take long for the kids to figure it out when they saw students who had set fires or punched teachers back in school the next day. The real shame of it is that most of the kids want to learn, and as any teacher knows, it only takes a few trouble-makers to make learning impossible. The new mayor wants to get rid of the Board of Ed and take over the schools, and this time he may have the teachers behind him. Wanna come teach here? For some reason, it's really tough to find subs. By the way my wife, who's been at the same middle school for nearly thirty years (so maybe teaching there has some rewards after all), was delighted when I surprised her with the Lucy tape yesterday. Thank you! The song and Lucy's performance are very special, and the last verse, which CBS inexplicably cut from the clip on their site, is especially poignant. I know there is some interest among high school students for acoustic music (the student-written Colombine song is a good example.) Unfortunately, I teach in the inner-city so I really don't see a lot of kids in my neck of the woods that are interested. I'm glad to see that there is still a grass-roots interest out there. rick - --- Fantine729@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 3/13/2002 9:30:22 PM Eastern > Standard Time, > rpniew@yahoo.com writes: > > > > high > > school students were actually listening to folk > music > > I think you'd be pleasantly surprised -- I know some > people on this list (and > others) who are now in college but who started > listening to folk music in > high school, and I do know a lot of high school kids > who aren't necessarily > on this list whom I have spotted at Lucy shows or > Dar shows or > Nerissa-and-Katryna-Nields shows.
