I'll put a full transcript up of what was said later today. I'm also going to try to get some video captures onto the website. But here's what happened.... Wow...Lucy looked and sounded AMAZING!! Bryant talked to her for a few minutes and then she sang LOTL. She had the black leather pants, black t-shirt and brown leather jacket and *shock* NO red lipstick and the hair was looking great *grin*! She looked gorgeous! He asked her about why she wrote it, and if she had a mission with it and they chatted. She went over to the stage and sang....wow....she sounded fantastic. As she sang they pulled away to show images of the towers, of ground zero, of the Statue of Liberty and they matched the images with the words she was singing (ie. thank you in a child's scrawl, taped to the 3rd street fire house wall-they showed a picture of just that). It was very moving and is a perfect song to commemorate the tragedies...thank you Lucy! Kristen www.angelfire.com/folk/lucykaplansky .Get more from the Web. Six months later the images and memories of that terrible time remain fresh not just in her mind but in her music too, specifically in her new song Land of the living...Lucy, good morning Lucy: Good Morning Bryant: When you sat there and watched on 9/11 from your Greenwich Village apartment did you feel compelled to write a song Lucy: Not at all, it was the last thing I would have thought of. I never planned to write this song, it kind of happened by accident Bryant: What do you mean, how does a song happen by accident Lucy: Well, songs often happen by accident, but this one was born out of an image. By the way I wrote this with my husband Rick Litvin. I was at Laguardia airport and I saw taxi drivers kneeling and praying right by the taxi stand in the middle of everything and the image was so arresting I wanted to do something with it and never related it to 9/11. And then a month later, in October, I thought maybe they're praying for us all. And then I started writing down the things I'd seen in my neighborhood the days after the attacks, like the memorials by the firehouses, the posters of the missing, and then i had this incident with this cab driver Bryant: Well yeah that's not a very pleasant incident but you chose to include it, why did you think it was so important to include Lucy: I guess I felt like it was an account of a witness, like this was history, and i was a witness to history Bryant: In this witnessing is there a message or is there a mission in this song Lucy: Yeah, I mean i think, the message is... first of all it's an account of the things i saw and of the collective grief and mourning which was everywhere and of that sense of community that came up that i've never experienced before, this bond between us as people and New Yorkers, between strangers. But also there's an image in the song of the Statue of Liberty looking over Manhattan still. And I think part of the message of the song, is, you know, what the Statue of Liberty stands for... things like freedom, opportunity, embracing of immigrants. Those are the things that America stands for and those were under attack And yet she's still standing and they're still standing Bryant: Why dont' you play it for us Lucy: Sure Bryant: Lucy Kaplansky, the song is called Land of the Living (promo picture of Lucy while the song starts up) Lucy sings with images of ground zero, the firehouses, the statue of liberty, etc. showing on the screen. We just didn't get to see it. I did think, though, that the ceremony and all the speakers and the moments of silence and all were quite moving. In the land of breaking news, there are tough editing decisions to be made all the time. I can fully understand why CBS felt it would be unable to give live coverage of the unveiling of the memorial at the same time as Lucy's slot. Thankfully they were able to edit the show down in the ensuing hour and get Lucy on for the Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones. At least that's what the reports you guys have submitted sound like. But if they knew what a powerful moment they had captured there, they would re-play the song and video of it during tonight's live unveiling of the Twin Towers of Light memorial. Maybe we can plant that message in the minds of the folks at CBS news who are organizing TONIGHT's special broadcast. If Lucy's music needed more exposure, it was definately west of the Mississippi anyway... Timothy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 11:37:15 -0500 From: Donna Myers Subject: [lucy-list] The Early Show The live coverage of the memorial service did go a little past 9:00 est. Libby, I know Rudy Giuliani mentioned DC and the Pentagon. Donna ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 12:39:12 -0500 From: Andy Jordan Subject: [lucy-list] Re: The Early Show /Think Positive Well, maybe what you say is true, Timothy, but CBS's decision to skip Lucy altogether in the city where the greatest damage was done, where she probably has her biggest fan base, and where she herself lives, just so they could cut to the middle of Martha Stewart's pre-taped cooking show, doesn't seem like a "tough editing decision," just a stupendously dumb one. Well before Lucy came on, they already knew they would be cutting to live coverage of the ceremony just before her spot. They could have brought her on earlier, or taken a few minutes after the ceremony to broadcast her segment. From reports here on lucy-list, her spot and her new song were just as relevant to the day's events as anything they broadcast this morning, and certainly a lot more worthwhile than most of what I caught on tape from 8am onward. I am really, really disappointed, and more than a little bit angry, as we were looking forward to this for a long time. CBS didn't even bother to mention she wouldn't be on in the east, and from the comments on the Early Show board (http://bbs.cbsnews.com/earlyshow/) I wouldn't expect CBS to be too responsive. Still, it doesn't hurt to try to get them to broadcast the song/video tonight. Andy Timothy Bruce wrote: > In the land of breaking news, there are tough editing decisions to be > made all the time.
