ANd when I first saw Lucy's name on the Cry Cry Cry CD I wondered what the chances she was related to that mathematician.... gosh, wasn't I totally shocked when I heard Lucy talk about her math dad when she played in Pittsburgh last fall..... I can't remeber excatly what paper I had seen Lucy's dad as a contributor or writer though... I do remeber it being insanely complicated and totally non understandable by a mere mortal civil engineering student like myself! I sort of wonder what sort of calculations lucy did for her dad. SInce she's not a mathematician herself they must have been pretty simple ones (1978 was the pre calulator stone age after all) Maybe she will share this info at a future concert! ~simona Simona L. Wait a minute, there were calculators in 1978. I was in graduate school then (studying math and statistics) and had (still have!!) my trusty programmable HP-25 with its red LED display. I'm new on the list and keeping up with the last week's e-mail is a chore in itself. I'm a folk music fan from Chicago; I enjoy Lucy Kaplansky (obviously), Anne Hills, Michael Smith, Tom Paxton, etc. I've been a fan of folk music since the mid-seventies when Chicago had great clubs like the Earl, Orphan's, Somebody Else's Troubles, Amazing Grace, Holstein's --- the list can go on forever. I remember seeing Steve Goodman backed up by some unknown guy named Jimmy Buffet. I'm thrilled to see the new resurgence in acoustic music these days, even though the definition of folk music has somewhat changed. I've never had the chance to see Lucy in concert, but I have a long weekend coming up next month and thought I'd make the trip over to Ann Arbor to see her (as an added bonus, Greg Brown is there the night before.) Anyway, I just wanted to say hello. Rick Yahoo! Ha! I knew I shouldn't have said my HP-25 was trusty. My degree is M.A., not Ph.D. (I didn't finish either of the two doctoral programs I was in.) and I've evolved into more of a software guy, so I generally don't put up my hand when Lucy asks about mathematicians in the crowd. > yoiu and libby(the original math geek) are both from > virgina.. > ... eewww. I thought you knew I'm from the Bronx. I came to Virginia (after Amherst, MA and Shaker Heights, O.) to be technical director at what I thought was a really cool company. The plan was to write training systems for the military (so they would fund development) then reuse the technology to teach kids algebra over the Internet. But the company folded and I've been looking for a new job (in NY, OH, or MA) for the last few months. Libby's not from Virginia either. Didn't she say she was from Green Bay?
