I am usually a little leery of band shows as opposed to solo shows---much as I know Lucy enjoys being with a band, I'm always a little worried the sound balance will be wrong and the band will drown her out. Tonight proved to me once and for all that I can love a Lucy-with-band show as much as a solo or nearly solo show. The sound was ABSOLUTELY right tonight---Lucy's voice was clear and perfect, and the band only enhanced it. It was definitely the best Lucy-with-band show I've seen, and maybe even one of the best Lucy shows I've seen period. Set list (well, two sets, with intermission in between), not necessarily in order (I wasn't writing it down) and probably with some things left out: He Thinks I Still Care Written on the Back of His Hand (I am known by now for loving this song anyway and feeling as if I could hear Lucy sing it 15 times in a row and not get bored...well, let me just say I could have quite happily listened to THIS version about 30 times in a row!) One Good Reason Don't Mind Me End of the Day Hole in My Head Crazy Dreams (newly arranged with the band, and really excellent...I liked the song anyway, but hearing it this way made me like it even better) Hot Burrito #1 (piano) Scorpion Ten Year Night Broken Things Bonny Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond (still beautiful after a few listenings at shows, and a nice addition to her repertoire) The Kid (great, even with some very minor stumbling over lyrics...I would not have necessarily recognized it as the Cry Cry Cry song...this version was Lucy's own, and it was riveting) Guilty As Sin (interestingly, after a segue about how it was just after Valentine's Day!) Land of the Living (never less than incredibly powerful) Wayfaring Stranger On an Asteroid With You (with BAND! After a moment's consideration, Lucy put down her guitar entirely and just really PERFORMED on this one, swaying to the music and really getting into it...it was one of the most DIFFERENT parts of the whole night compared to anything I'd seen before, and Lucy seemed to love it, as did we...I think this was the song in the middle of which she even said to the band, "Play it, boys!" which made everyone laugh, including Lucy...but they DID play it, and very well!) Promise Me Turn the Lights Back On Encore: Song for Molly Encore: Just You Tonight (piano) Overall, it was a fantastic night. And more of the same to look forward to tomorrow for those of us who are doing a double-header (Sharon and Timothy and Gerry and me)...plus tomorrow the Bitchin' Babes reunite in full force...I hardly want to go to sleep in between! But I guess I'll have to try...
