I drove from Omaha to see Lucy for the first time. Great show. Having never seen her live before, I should start by saying that I've changed my casting for the lead part in "The Lucy Kaplansky Story" (a Lifetime movie) from Amy Brennerman to Julia Louis Dreyfuss. I very much enjoyed the show, although the way the seating was set up, it was a little hard to see the stage. As usual, Lucy came on during Jennifer's set. Question, long-time fans: Is Lucy uncomfortable on stage, at least at first? She seemed very reluctant there in the beginning. She warmed up later on, but at first there was a lot of staring at shoes. Maybe not wanting to take the spotlight away from Jennifer? Anyway, the set list was posted elsewhere--and I'm not a set scribe, Kristen, but wasn't the last song of the main set "Scorpion"? Got to meet Lucy after, which was very nice. Now if we could only get good music directly here in Omaha without a 2 1/2 hour drive! After the last few days I realized that is what makes them so damn good together...that they listen very carefully to what the other is singing. You'll see them moving their heads with the melody of one so that they can get the harmony just right. I'll post my review of the shows tonight but Hastings was not my favorite show....the sounds wasn't very good and the sightlines bite unless you're right in the middle. My wife and I saw Lucy Kaplansky and Jennifer Kimball in concert last night in Moundridge KS. The venue (Old Settler's Inn) is _very_ small and intimate. And the performances were amazing. Jennifer Kimball was one half of the folk duo The Story, sings many of the vocals for The Wayfaring Strangers, and also participates in a group called Maybe Baby. She opened the show and was absolutely fantastic. Her voice is truly one of the most beautiful instruments I've ever heard, and I'm married to an opera singer! Jennifer played a few tunes off of her latest record "Veering from the waves" and also sang a song off of the Wayfaring Strangers record. She brought Lucy up during her set for harmony. Their two voices (very distinct in their own rights) blended into an amazing combination. Lucy was up next (wearing black leather pants and joking about them). She sang a good combination of old and new songs. Including, the Alphabet song modified by her father. She and Jennifier also graced us with "Return of the Grievious Angel". Lucy also sang a new song she had written about living in New York after September 11, 2001. I found it to be one of the most meaningful expressions of emotion and feeling related to the terrorists attacks. I sincerely hope she records it and makes it available. Anyway, I've been a fan of Lucy's for some years now. I came to know her music through her connection with Shawn Colvin. This is the second time I've seen her live and I am incredibly impressed with her performing, audience relation, and artistic beauty. It was a great concert, and I can't wait for her to return. ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V4 #37 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
