Out from lurking. I found this listed on Musi-cal. Sat Feb 02, 2002 8:00pm Lucy Kaplansky Berrie Center , Mahwah, NJ There was no contact info listed for the Berrie Center. Does this mean it is closed to the public? Also the last weekend in Jan Lucy is scheduled at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival (25th Anniversary). Has anyone been to this before? It looks like the sets might be pretty short, as the festival is listed from 6-11pm Sat only. I wouldn't mind seeing Nanci Griffith and some of the other performers but I can't deal with more than one song at a time from "Sons of the Never Wrong". Graham and I are needing our Lucy fix and so far Hightstown has not booked her. Becky ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Words like rambling certainly apply to the last few songs on the cd. But, I think the great songs (Red Clay Halo, I Want to Sing That Rock And Roll, Revelator) certainly outweigh the others (although they could have only charged $9.95 for the cd) :-) I certainly think it's listenable if you use it for background music. When I take it to work it's the first cd I put on. Nice way to get started in the morning, and by the time the 14:40 song comes on, I'm usually in the midst of multi-tasking. Plus, I don't feel the need to pause if I have to get up. :-) Oh, I think "phony mountain-girl act" was a little harsh. Unless you have a recording of her talking like a valley girl or something. :-) don Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Unless you > have a recording of her talking like a valley girl or something. :-) She talks in ordinary un-accented English, like the upper-class LA college girl that she is. Her bluegrassy sound and Possum Holler wardrobe are, if not exactly faked, certainly voluntarily adopted as a professional artistic choice. And I like a lot of her work, but not for the Coal Miner's Daughter shtick, just as songwriting. Maybe it was Huskey dying, maybe it was creative ennui (a self inflicted fate), but TIME(TR) seemed a bit of a trainwreck to me. I hope she comes back roaring next time. Gillian welch is a southern californian who must be about 26 now and i could never understand how she channelled the Carter family, bakersfield is a long way from the dustbowl.. insulting Loretta Lynn who was a teen when she married and is still illiterate..she was a young mother of many children who was propelled into her music career based on need and desire. She and her husband launched her career.. her backwood accent is pure and genuine. dolly parton is another woman singer songwriter, who needs to lose that characture of herself, and rest on the laurels of her own songwriting.. country, pop and bluegrass.. i know there are many artists who have found their niche or shtick and overplay it... i am not sure that gillian welch is one of them.. i am a fan.. she writes dark songs in the style of the english folk ballads only based in americanna.. i think Time the revelator is a great cd.. even with the 14.40 minute song.. the americanna movement of music is back in full swing with OH brother.. and gillian was a precedent to that movement.. her work with T Bone Burnett, emmylou and early one is remarkable.. Other than the headliner (this year Nanci) and the 2nd top-billed act (Doc & Grisman), the others all have barely enough time to get warmed up. Just a taste so the people in the audience who may not know some acts will want to see them at the Ark later. It is a very fast-paced festival, with one short intermission. I highly recommend it, but Hill Auditorium is pretty big--4,000 capacity--and always sells out, so really good seats are probably gone by now. I look for Lucy's set to go over very well and generate good interest in her post-festival date, which is March 23. It's always puzzled me that she is not more popular in Ann Arbor; this appearance should rectify that. She also is playing the two shows at the Ark with Cheryl, John and Cliff on the Sunday before that, Jan 20, and is in Kalamazoo on Jan 24, so this is a good Lucy month here in Michigan.
