The Renfrew Ferry, contrary to some predictions, was warm, comfortable, and a perfect setting for a Lucy show. Lucy really liked the venue, and when we asked if she would be back, she said, "definitely"! All of our friends who were there agreed that Lucy's impromptu "Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond" was fantastic. Lucy, if you read this, please develop the song and put it in you repertoire, we thought it was great. If there are any others who were in the audience last night who agree please say so, maybe Lucy reads these ramblings! So what Lucy described as "the Lucy and Alice World Tour of Scotland" has come to an end with the date at the Renfrew Ferry, the old car ferry that Lucy described as the coolest place she had ever played with the river outside (and underneath!), a Christmas tree suspended from the ceiling and even a disco glitterball. When most of us were there two weeks ago for Dar Williams, opinions of the venue had varied, but this time they had moved the stage to one of the long sides which meant that more of the audience down on the car deck got closer to the stage. The Ferry had been decorated for Christmas although they did not have the Christmas lights switched on and the feel was definately better this time. The temperature was also better this time with Alice even saying, once she got on stage, that she was quite warm. Unfortunately they must have taken that to heart since it got quite cold once Lucy came on. After the freezing conditions and the magnificent starry night in Glenfarg, Glasgow was warmer and very much wetter. Alice's husband Hugh had pulled the short straw earlier to go out and get them all an Indian meal before hand through the rain, whilst some of us were dicing with heavy rain, lots of spray, roadworks and traffic jams on the motorway into Glasgow. However once we were there and Alice came on, the trials on the motorway were worth it. With only time for 5 or 6 songs, Alice chose some that were different from the night before and enjoyed a lengthy queue for her CD, entitled Real Day, immediately afterwards. For those on the rest of the UK & Ireland tour, be prepared to buy this album, if she has any left, considering how quickly they were selling last night. The system was that Hugh sold you the album and with Alice standing right beside him, he asked you if you would like it autographed - - well it would have been rude to say no in front of the both of them. Rumour has it that she might be back in May around the time that her new album is due - - it would be nice to hear a full set. Lucy was in fine voice when she came on and having spoken to many of the listers in the Bein Inn the night before, she was very aware that there was a group of us that were doing both venues. Her special offer the night previous was that anyone there both nights could have a request and we had both The Tide and My Name Joe added as a result. After getting a chorus of Take the High Road (or is it called Loch Lomond?) in Glenfarg, her tour manager had downloaded the full song from the internet and we were treated to the full version, albeit with more English lyrics that most of the Scots in the audience were singing. She even got translations of some of the more Scottish terms in it to her pleasement and our amusement. The Christmas decorations prompted her to sing White Christmas and the set ending up a good bit different to the previous night. We learned that Rick has banned her from driving in the UK, afraid she would end up in a accident from driving on the wrong side of the road, so Alice has been driving and she had only hit the curbs in Edinburgh twice that day. The story of the brown leather trousers was slightly changed from the previous night. Now we are more than capable of translating the American "brown leather pants" into the Queen's English of "brown leather trousers" particularly since pants means underwear over here which, as Lucy said, puts a whole new meaning on her standing on stage and telling her audience that she felt like a dominatrix wearing her brown leather pants! There are some things that an audience does not really need to know but it did not stop a long queue for CDs and autographs afterwards. So roll on next year so we can see her again and continue to put names to the faces of Donald, Liz, Jenny, Iain, Ian and Walter. When we were having a meal in the bar there was a young couple , American's (you can tell by the accent you know), who turned out to be Alice Peacock along with her husband Hugh. Alice immediately warmed to us having discovered that I had that morning sent her an e-mail wishing her all the best on the tour - Is that Donald , as in Donald & Liz ? , she asked , and hey you know how like doing my "meet the musicians" bit ... Before the show we made various "new" friends Lucy Listers who I hadn't previously met - Jenny (& her Mum) , Ian , Iain , and Jeremy (who I've met now at a few shows) - so that was really cool , if I can use an expression used by my kids. The show was sold out , ok only 60 seats , but sold out anyway Alice Peacock opened , with a short , but excellent set comprising songs from her current CD "Real Day" along with a couple from a new album she's working on now , and hoping to have out in the Spring of next year. I have to say that I loved her vocal style which is a bit similair to Shawn Colvin , but that's intended as a compliment , not a criticism . As Jeremy pointed out in his review Alice is hoping to come back to the UK in May , so for UK listers please look out for her round your way , and go along and support her. I'm going to see if we can arrange a gig in The Lemon Tree here In Aberdeen for her Lucy appeared to be genuinely happy to be back in Scotland , and were certainly delighted to have her back She opened with "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night" , which she explained was because she was apparently known as a Country artist in the UK , and this was of course a country classic - not sure where that idea of Lucy being country comes from , but I hate labels. This was the first track of many from Every Single Day that she performed During the , long , introduction to Ten Year Night Lucy movingly recounted the events of 11th September and the fact that her Manhattan apartment had a sweeping view of Downtown and what she had seen that day , and the fact that it made her realise what was really important to her , and that was her husband - A very personal , emotional moment , with Lucy herself being ckoked up telling us about it . We did have some interesting audience / stage exchanges , with however the Scottish dialect causing Lucy more than her fair share of problems , but hey we got through it , until of course Lucy asked if she could have a drink - big mistake time here folks , .... she asked for Irish Whiskey - in Scotland , oooooops ! , and then went on to say she didn't like Scotch , double oooops !! , so the owner went off to keep our lady happy , and came back with the news that Scotch it would have to be as there was no Irish stuff - and she said she liked it , I mean really really liked it .... Then we got the Ricolla cough drops / Bryan Ferry story - now remember we were amongst the first to hear about this about a year ago , and she's still telling it , and what's more Mr Ferry still hasn't released his album , with Lucy on Backing vocals. Lucy has invited Bryan to come along to her London show where she is looking forward to singing him "More Than This" Lucy announced that as she was in Scotland she wanted to sing some Scottish songs - so first out of the bag was Rabbie Burn's "Auld Lang Syne" (That's Robert Burns to the non Scots) , which with the audience singing along was a great moment - then we got the traditional song "The Bonnie Banks O' Loch Lomond" which she told us she didn't know many of the words and as it turned out neither did the audience - myself included. She promised to get the words for Glasgow the following night (which she did but more of that later) Far too quickly the show was coming to an end with Lucy closing with the Julie Miller song "By way of sorrow" which they covered on the cry x 3 album Back she came for her first encore and somebody (ok it was me ) shouted out "Play us a George Harrison song" - to which she replied "Hey are you psychic ? - - I was just going to do that song - Scary , or what ? We all sang along with "Here comes the sun" , and it sounded really good Back came Alice to sing harmony on Guinivere which was possibly my highlight of the night , wonderful vocal performance from both girls. Final reappearence to the stage was psychic experience No 2 when someone (no not me this time) shouted out for "A Bob Dylan" song which she duly performed with her cover of "It Ain't Me Babe" from the excellent "Nod To Bob" collection - again allegedly what she had intended to play. A great night and even better when we were among very few people who sayed overnight at the hotel had the opportunity to sit and chat with Lucy , Alice and others around a log fire sipping some whisky (Scottish , of course) I did admit to Lucy that I knew that she had sung "Here comes the sun" at The Cedar a few nights before from "one of the guys on The Lucy List" - Oh that will be Timothy she said , and of course Lucy was correct - thanks for the info Tim! The set list (In order) The Angels Rejoiced Written On The Back Of His Hand One Good Reason Don't Mind Me Broken Things Ten Year Night Crazy Dreams Guilty As Sin (we were reminded it was not autobiographical) More Than This Song For Molly Auld Lang Syne Bonnie Banks O' Loch Lomond Mr Kaplansky's Alternative Alphabet Song Scorpion End Of The Day Turn The Lights Back On You're Still Standing There By Way Of Sorrow ++++++++++++++++ Here Comes The Sun Guinivere ++++++++++++++++ It Ain't Me Babe Hope I haven't bored you too much Donald ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 12:33:27 EST From: IFBUCHAN@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy hits Scotland Walter and Jeremy have previously given very good reports of the surroundings and anecdotes of the past couple of nights. We "listers" were certainly given a very warm reception by Lucy and she sincerely thanked us for supporting her over the years. It is like meeting an old friend and a pleasure to be able to talk to her on these terms. What really surprised me was that although Iain and I did not get a chance to speak to her last year, she still remembered us from our meeting the previous year and even that we were both called Ian(Iain). We must have made a big impression. Anyway, I told her to get Mr Shindell to get his butt over here as he would be very much appreciated. The sets were quite varied over the two shows and it would be very hard to say which was the better gig. It was really good to hear some of the older songs which we have not had the chance to hear such as What's so funny about peace love and understanding, My name Joe but more importantly Guinnivere. That was an absolute blinder both nights with Alice Peacock singing harmony vocals. It put me in mind of Crosby and Nash singing Crosby's song of the same name. Tingly neck experience. I would love Lucy to come over with a band some time just to experience that. However, I don't think Lucy would have the same freedom of choice of numbers. She is always game for trying songs even if she does not know all the words. If I had a boat, Loch Lomond and Evangeline were just a few she attempted. The family atmosphere allows her to do that and if she gets lost for words there is always a bit of encouragement from the audience. This is what makes the shows nice, friendly and fun. Nice to see Walter and Joyce again (and Jenny, of course) and being able to personally meet Jeremy and Donald and Liz for the first time. We all know who were are now and have no hesitation in saying "Hi". Oh no, just thought, it's 12 months til we will see Lucy again!! Libby (expert at music AND software) is exactly right. The DOCS.DOC.pif file I received is exactly 29020 bytes, just as http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html said it would be. But I didn't execute the attachment. And I most definitely do not use Outlook (ewww!) or Internet Explorer. So I don't have the virus, but I think someone on the list does and it got forwarded to me because the W32.Badtrans.B@mm sends replies to unread emails and I posted to the lucy-list this morning. So all you lucy-listers, be sure not to click on DOCS.DOC.pif or any other executable attachments. And patch your Internet Explorer because this worm uses the "malformed MIME exploit" to cause an unpatched IE to execute the attachment without prompting. Thanks a lot, Libby! I misspoke in my first message. The infected message didn't say it was from me--it said it was from Rita Tulliani . That's one of the addresses mentioned at the link Libby forwarded, http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html But the message said its return-path was to me, and that's why the message bounced to me, even though the Mailer-Daemon said it was undeliverable. So a lucy-lister whose outgoing mail goes through mailcore.pol.net.uk has the W32.Badtrans.B@mm worm. And lucy-listers need to be alert because Mailer-Daemon@mailcore.pol.net.uk may bounce the worm (just as it did to me) to anyone who posts to the lucy-list. whew.
