Our previous experience there was in the summer, when we heard Heather Miles. We put it down to the fact that we just didn't enjoy the music, much to twangy and mainstream Country for us. In short, we hated it! Thought if you went downstairs it might be better, but perhaps not? Do we dress up warm? Do we arrive early to keep out of the draughts? Tell us, please! There was a reception set up in the lobby with drinks, and all sorts or finger foods and dessert. The reception was at 6:30 and the FUV staff were available to spend time with the members. It was like they really wanted to talk to members and learn more about who their listenership was. the auditorium was a 100 seater with great sound. i had seen Lucy earlier and knew she was wearing black leather pants and her jean jacket. she had ben butler on guitar and paul bryan (from aimee manns band) with her after the radio introduction, you all heard.. she hit the stage to a rowdy but loving crowd-these people wanted to see her - she opened with Wayfaring stranger and as jeff listed her set list was focussed on ESD including ESD on the guitar.. i had only heard it on piano before lucy was in great voice and have 150% of herself to this show.. the nuances of her voice were in credible. she played wiht notes and with the styling of the songs were amazing. she took the room by storm after the show..she was flocked with the DJs and with fans. as goofy or wornout as i have heard people say, the staff of FUV asked her if they can play.. THE SONG ABOUT PI .. So to the critics of PI. dont listen to FUV or you may hear it.. the other song that WE must hear all season is lucy's version of white xmas. She uses the guitar and her version.. fills the space that the holiday season needs . it was amazing to hear her do it and i am glad she did.. so all season itll be White Xmas.. the show was about 1.5 hours .. not even and i believe all of it was transmitted over the radio.. i think they were to record one hour.. comments were HOW generous lucy was with her time and talent and what a great members concert to attend thanks to lucy and rick for a night to remember and for the fun and adventure sharonG I danced a lot of nights until the grass was wet It wasn't over yet Round 'bout 3AM you made a friend And I followed a lot of idle crazy thoughts because It's where the meaning was Though I tried to find it every other way ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 10:21:28 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] WFUV Members Concert 11/26/2001 Set List Did anyone happen to record this?? I only subscribed yesterday and allready I've god several messages. You 're a busy bunch! May I introduce myself? I'm a teacher in a primary school. I'm 33 years old. I'm married and father of four children. I'm not used to write in English, but I think your Dutch isn't good either. Sorry if I'm writing silly mistakes, I hope you understand what I mean to say. I never heard from Lucy till last week. Our local radio played Still standing there. It was only six in the morning, but I was immediatly awake. What a song!! I switched on the computer and searched the web for news about this performer. I haven't got the chance to visit a record shop to look for one of the doc's records, but I know that there will be one under the chrismass tree for me! I'll take care of that myself. Does anyone know wether Lucy comes to Belgium to play gigs? - --------------------------------------------------------------- Miir dan gratis internettoegang ... Just a note or two: >>>Lucy Kaplansky Live from the Walsh Family Library at Fordham University 11/26/2001 Broadcast on WFUV 90.7FM Lucy Kaplansky, Guitar and Vocals Paul Bryan, Bass Ben Butler, Guitar<<< It is not every single day that you get to hear Lucy with a "band" and that was reason enough to be happy about tuning this one in. Also she played "ESD" which I was curious to hear live because it is so highly produced on the CD. All in all, it came together well, but I have some concerns about the relationship between Lucy and her bass player. Lucy plays probably a hundred and fifty shows a year all alone up on a stage, just a grrrl and hrrr guitar. She determines the pace of the songs by her strumming. When she plays with an electric guitar accompanist this doesn't really change things as they typically add flourishes in-between lines. But when you add a bass player, she has little choice but to fit all of her notes within the structure set up by the "rhythm section". I think Lucy felt a little out of her element playing with a bass player who was not as intimately familiar with her songs as perhaps he should be. At times she didn't seem sure whether she should be leading or following the bass line. I wonder if I am the only one who picked up on that. Some of the songs (like "ESD") really can benefit from a bass in the mix. But other songs "plodded" more than they otherwise would if it had been just Lucy and her guitar. The bass player in Lucy's band needs to be (and I quote Lucy's mom here) "zippy", in other words dynamic and responsive to Lucy with a distinctively light touch so that Lucy still feels impelled to lead by her strumming. Of course, the more the three play together, the more likely this will be. Just my two cents worth! I think it's great that they play Lucy in Belgium. Did you hear it on an American channel or a local one? Don't worry about your English. It's just fine. In fact, it is much better than what you may find in other messages on this list. I have spent 3 summers of my life in Brussels and Knokke. It's a lovely country. The food is SO good too. Too bad you missed our discussion about cheese. The best cheese I have ever had was in Belgium. Actually, there are lots of good things to eat in Belgium. Just the other day I was thinking about how you could walk down the street and get those wonderful waffles (gaufrettes?) and pommes frite. See, my Flemish/French is pathetic. Don't be shy about posting.
