Yo sharon.. Thanks for your reply. It's interesting that Lucy didn't appear with the Wayfaring Strangers. Lucy is so prominent on their new cd; and opened both of the last two Lucy shows I saw by singing "Wayfaring Stranger". Yet she doesn't plug their cd and doesn't sell it at her shows. Maybe some contractual restriction applies? They range in price from $109 to $275 and are all 2/3 or 3/4 size instruments. Five of the guitars reviewed are nylon-string and one is steel-string. She suggests that nylon-string guitars are generally easier for children to learn to play. Because the steel-string she reviewed is a little heavier than than the others, the kids who tested thought it might be less suitable for smaller children. Have fun shopping! I send this a bit ago, but I think it was too long... so part two will be on its way shortly! - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2001 21:21:42 -0500 (EST) From: "Elizabeth (Libby) Wiebel" To: LUCY-LIST@SMOE.ORG Subject: Doc Does Denver... and other random thoughts Hey everyone! Just got back from a week long trip to Denver... Supercomputing conference... Conference was good, and the bonus was getting to see Lucy Wednesday night. I swear, she must think I'm stalking her... she just about dropped her jaw and her Martin when she saw me standing there... "Oh my GAWD.... you're from VIRGINIA... what the HELL are you doing HERE???" :) So... let me back up... I flew out last week Sunday... my first flights since 9/11... and suffice it to say I was plenty nervous. No... not nervous enough to consider driving the 1700 miles to the conference... but all the added security... and the feeling of "finality" when they closed the door on the plane and we started to taxi... There was this unspoken tension everywhere... I felt like everyone could feel it, but no one wanted to talk about it. Kind of like at a funeral. I don't know... it was difficult. My first flight was a little bitty plane... about 30 people... to get me up to DC... and the only thing that went through my head the entire flight were the lyrics to a song I wrote a couple of weeks ago regarding the whole 9/11 incident... I'd performed it just the night before with my band, so it was on the brain... a little too heavy on the brain! By the time I got on my second flight and took some tylenol, I was settled down enough to read some of "Mists of Avalon", the latest Dirty Linen, and a couple of tech papers I had been meaning to review. But... it was just a nervous situation all the way around. Anyway... just my reactions.... I'm glad that the security is there... except for the fact that it's a blatant reminder of *why* it's there... if that makes any sense! Anyway... Lucy in Denver. I dragged along a friend from work and I do believe I successfully made a new Lucy convert. :) As I predicted, he purchased two Lucy CDs... and seemed to really enjoy it. I love bringing newbies along... :) She was totally energy-hyped and gave a great performance.... kept talking about the altitude... and both she and Alice Peacock kept commenting on how the really dry air was making their guitars go way out of tune... again and again! She wore the new brown leather pants and a black shirt... funky slingback brown sandals... and no jacket! The set list (with notes interjected): Alice Peacock opened. WOW. I'd never heard her before.... and she was great. BUY HER CD (**advertising section over**). *grin* Then..... * Wayfaring Stranger -- she wayfared with us... not with the Wayfarers... * Written on the Back of His Hand -- it was a bit faster than I'd heard it before, and a little bit of a "country" feel to it... I really liked it * One Good Reason And then... an interjection... "those were three incredibly dark songs...." * Don't Mind Me... so she said she'd play something less dark... Gets through the first little bit... "don't mind me, I'm just a bit maniacal about you, and derailed when I'm without you, don't mind me..." She kept playing.... but said between verses... "geez... this one's kinda dark, too!" * Broken Things... I love this song... THIS is the one that *I* put on repeat. Over and over. I wish I had Julie Miller's version and Lucy's together on a single CD so I could just put the disk on repeat... and not have to swap out... (oh wow, do I sound neurotic!!) .... cutting here... part II will be on its way in moments! The club we were at was called "The Soiled Dove".... and apparently, she had asked beforehand what was up with the name. Well... they told her that the term "soiled dove" was a euphemism for "prostitute" and that once upon a time, this particular area of Denver used to be a "red light district"... and the building we were in used to be a brothel! So... Lucy says, "hmmmm... I don't think I've ever played in a brothel before!" Well... she kept playing the 10YN intro... and says... "I've been trying to think of brothel-songs all night... but I guess I'll play this one instead..." And she was going to start... but then all of a sudden STOPPED and said... WAIT!!! I know a brothel song!! She told us we'd all have to sing along because she wasn't sure if she knew all the words... But BOOM... there we were with the Doc leading us in a huge rendition of "The House of the Rising Sun"... a true brothel song! *grin* * Ten Year Night -- well... yes, then we did get to hear this one... * And THEN... an exciting moment... the DEBUT of a new song! Well.. the first part of a new song. She said she was trying it out on us... I'm gonna call it "The Land of the Living" since she didn't give it a title. It had a 9/11 theme and painted a whole bunch of little vignettes... WOW. It was great... I was ready to stand up for that one's applause, but I didn't get a chance because all of a sudden she was into... * Peace Love and Understanding... which was KICK ASS per usual. :) Well after that... it was discussion on the leather pants... then the Bryan Ferry/Ricola story... leading into * More than This * Song for Molly * Scorpion Mom and Dad stories... * Dad's Alphabet Song * Song About Pi -- she wasn't going to do this, but the audience requested it * End of the Day (or whatever the title is of this one... the one I always forget!!) * Turn the Lights Back On * Someday Soon ... an Ian Tyson cover that she said she "had" to do... just because she was in Colorado (lyrics here: http://digilander.iol.it/lerenti/lyrics/full/b/bogguss_suzy/suzy07.html for anyone who is unfamiliar, as I was!) * By Way of Sorrow Encore: * Guinevere... with Alice Peacock back up on stage to do the harmonies... and WOW... AWESOME harmony. It was great. So... in summation... the night rocked. It was a great week all around... and a Lucy concert to boot. :) She said that I might win the prize for having seen her in the most locations in a year's time... or maybe the most distance travelled... Baked goods didn't come with... but the Williamsburg postcard did... and the claim is that Rick is really enjoying his colonial tri-corn hat. Today was the trip back home... and since the plane crash in Queens... and all the added military stuff going on this week... well... security was even tighter. Took me over an hour to get from bag check to the gate... just because the lines were so long. First flight was without incident. And the second flight was, too... except for the fact that we sat on the runway for almost an hour... while they monkeyed with baggage and passengers.... trying to get us under the weight limit... we were overloaded. Uff... the flight was only 25 minutes long... and we sat for twice that! But... home again, home again... and high time to sleep in my own bed... and catch up on whatever went on in the "real world" this week. Grateful for safe travels... a good conference... and Doc in Denver. So... per usual... a lengthy review. I'd totally say... if you're travelling... check out who's playing in the area you're going to. You get to see new fun venues... and if it's a performer you usually see someplace else... it's really kind of cool to see *them* in a new environment, too... with a different crowd... and new surroundings. I love it... FUN! Take care, all... And travel safely....
