I echo that. The half size strat is excellent. Sounds amazing considering what it is. I did try to convince my son a few years back. My daughter wanted an acoustic so I bought her what she wanted (Can't remember, was it a Washburn Ian, you bought your son one) and she never touches it. I might just pick up a guitar for me too....I always say you're only as old as you feel...I'm 39. Out of the blue last night...my 6yr old says, "Lucy Kaplansky's older brother is lucky...he has a cool name, Spike". Lucy talked about Spike at the show on Sun. He is the same son who thought Lucy said this is a "trick song" before she played "Don't Mind Me" at another show. They do listen!! I'll let you know how I make out with the guitars. It will not sound as good as more expensive guitars but that shouldn't matter when you're first learning. I paid $200 as a package deal with a case, tuner, etc. so $159 is good without the package. I spent another $35 to have the neck adjusted, bridge lowered, and lighter strings put on so the action is now very good. I am learning on a 3/4 size at the moment and after trying out several full sizes I realized that many of those were too big for my hands. I'm on the tall side of average for a chic and I play a full size violin so I would really doubt that a kid could handle such a big instrument. I would suggest getting the appropriate sized instrument for the kids. (imagine a six year old on a full size bike without training wheels... not a good fit either!) As per my earlier post, a good teacher should be the best guide for instrument purchase. And since you will have to find a teacher to teach them anyway then that's your best bet. ALso, instrument rental is probably your cheapest option. If the kids decide that in six months they want to play the trumpet then at least you don't have to wonder what to do with the now untouched guitar! ~SLL Donna Myers wrote: I didn't sell the children....but I did see a Yamaha F310 full-size folk guitar in my local Costco(warehouse store) today for $159.99 with accessories. BUT.... I have a Yamaha. It is nearly 35 years old... which is older than me. It came from some friends who were hippies in the golden age of hippi-ness... they said... yeah... we bought it... but never learned to play it... said... it was kind of "obligatory" they felt to own a guitar. Now... I can't comment on the validity of that statement... but that's the word they told me. Anyway... my Yamaha did really well. I used it A LOT for the seven or eight years since I got it. It's recently been replaced by a beautiful Ibanez... a birthday gift... Anyway... my Yamaha was a great instrument for me because... I wasn't initally very serious about learning to play super-well... but it still gave me exposure to the instrument. It held together really well... even 35-years old... and hauled off on camping trips and all sorts of places... and it's still in great playable condition. Problems w/ it, though... were that as compared to some "nicer" guitars (hard to use that word... kind of a sketchy term), it was difficult to play. Like... I could never master a clean sounding bar chord... but now with my Ibanez, they sound 100 times better. So... the quality of the instrument might be a little lower... but the price really can't be beat. Also... my Yamaha came from the days when they were still assembling them in Japan. I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard that they are being assembled in the US now... and that the quality has gone down. Don't quote me on it... but that's what I heard. I'd check out.... Alvarez... a lot of their starter models are really great to play. They're a little more than $160... and don't come with accessories for the low price... but at the same time, they're NICE to play... and IMHO, a step up from a Yamaha. And... my bit of advertising... check out http://www.musiciansfriend.com... they've got some great deals every now and then... I've gotten quite a bit of equipment from them. "Confession" seems rather a heavy word...but OK, OK, I will admit to all interested parties (and I am not QUITE sure why this was so funny as to make Sharon miss her turn, but so be it) that I have a thing for "Written on the Back of His Hand," ESPECIALLY that second verse...and I could happily listen to Lucy sing the song (or even just the VERSE) live at least 15 times in a row. Which is not to say I don't adore lots of other Lucy songs and verses too. I just happen to be particularly addicted to that one right now...I don't seem to be able to let a day pass without listening to WOTBOHH a few times, and that second verse sends chills down my spine (the good kind) every single time. They are really good guitars. My current one is semi acoustic so that when I am playing larger venues I don't have to mike up. However, I have a son who begged for a guitar for his Xmas 2 years ago. I looked around and got him a nice Washburn. He has hardly touched it. I play it whenever I can't be bothered taking mine out of it's case. My advice is DO NOT spend a whack on a guitar for a kid as it may well be a phase he/she is going through. If he/she does get serious then by all means upgrade to a better model like the Yamaha. I've been there, got the tee shirt. Ian PS I have since sold the kid and bought a Gibson Ha Ha ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V3 #252 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
