You may be tempted to buy something less expensive - like through the JC Penney Christmas catalog. The smaller guitars in the Penney's catalog range in price from about $30 to $70 for the acoustics and there's an electric for about $100. The problem is that these guitars may be poorly made and very difficult to play because of the distance between the fretboard and the strings. The end result will be your children will become frustrated and will lose interest in learning. I suggest getting the better quality guitar and having the neck, bridge and strings adjusted to suit the child's ability and you will probably see better results sooner. Good luck! The great thing about smaller instruments like guitars and violins is that you can probably find places that rent these instruments out. Chances are that a rented instrument will be of pretty decent quality (since they have to last through lots of students). Doubt that you could find an electric guitar for rent in child size, but a child size acoustic should be no problem. Your best bet is to find a good teacher and have him/her guide you in instrument purchase and renting. Also, there are probably many other folks out there who bought guitars for small children and now that those kids have grown are willing to sell them. A good quality used instrument is always better than a poor quality brand new instrument. Again, a good teacher should guide you through the purchase of an instrument. This is a good time to introduce your children to music. They are still young enough to learn a great deal iin a short period of time but old enough to appreciate music. Kids who study music do better in school, especially at math. One of the things I have seen through my mother's piano students was the number of parents who ended up taking lessons too! I would suggest that if you have a desire to learn to play the guitar (or another instrument) that this be the time to start too. Its just a great way to bond with your kids and will make practice time that much more fun if mom and/or dad is practicing alongside them (and messing up!) good luck, Simona Simona L. I have a Baby Taylor, a 3/4 size guitar, that I adore. The neck is a bit narrower than other 3/4-size guitars I tried, which makes it easier for my stubby fingers to play. I just couldn't find a 1/2 size that I could take seriously. These Baby Taylors are very reasonably priced (I paid $250 at an independent store, so I imagine a chain might have it for less) and sound wonderful for their size. It seemed like tons of people had them at Falcon Ridge, and my guitar teacher also has one (though it's not her main guitar). I also know a lot of kids who had started out with these (some younger than your sons). I would definitely get the action lowered for a child, as it was kind of high for my tastes, but I never got around to doing anything about it, and now I'm used to it. County Joe tours with the larivee... chack out their website... the mini-strats are in most decent music stores and are a generic brand thing. you can put light guage strings (009 for the high e - the top strong) and that won't hurt those little hands... - ----- Original Message ----- From: "McKay, David" To: Sent: Monday, November 12, 2001 6:18 AM Subject: [lucy-list] Guitar Advice ... > > My children are 6 and 8yrs old and were discussing what types of guitars > > they want for Christmas on the drive home.
