I've just returned from a trip to the USA. One of the highlights was when Joy and I attended Lucy's show at McCabe's in Santa Monica on 2nd November. For those of you familiar with McCabe's excuse the following, but I know the Scottish Listers will be interested in the venue. McCabe's Guitar Shop on Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica is a long established folk and Alternative music venue. It is, quite simply, superb! By day McCabe's is obviously THE place in Greater LA to buy acoustic guitars and other musical instruments. You enter through a side door and go through a smaller outer shop, into the main sales area, which is also where the shows take place. I tell you, this is one funky venue, and the atmosphere hits you as soon as you walk in! All along the walls are guitars, hundreds of them, hanging in rows like brickwork! Its fascinating and makes you feel you are entering a space where, as Nanci Griffith would say, "The music is in the bricks". It is quite a large room, with about 150 folding chairs laid out. The stage is at bottom, right, with stairs from upstairs leading down, from where the performers emerge. We saw all kinds of guitars, Steel guitars, violins, ukuleles, etc, even a pair of bagpipes hung up for sale! In the outer foyer they sell sheet music, accessories, even a small selection of CD's. The information sheet shows that apart from also having concerts on Friday & Saturday McCabe's run extensive tutorial programmes, guitar tuning seminars, etc. First on was a Chicago based singer/songwriter called Alice Peacock. Alice was and ideal show opener, with straightforward, pleasant, if not particularly unique music. Her talk between songs was excellent, and she had an already receptive audience eating to of her hands when she told us her grandmother was in the audience. What a nice way to spend 40 minutes. After a wee break on came Lucy, replete in tan leather trousers. The scabby jacket she picked up in Glasgow last December seems to have gone, thank goodness, but there is still a risk it will re-appear in colder venues. Accompanying Lucy on electric guitar was Nina Gerber, who was a great pal of the late Kate Wolf, of "Across the Great Divide"Fame. Nina put together a very nice tribute album called "Treasures Left Behind", well worth a listen. Lucy's first song, which I had never heard before, was an absolutely terrific gospel tune, which I hope she plays in Glasgow. The set that followed was more varied and polished than we had heard before, with songs from all Lucy's albums. Ten Year Night was excellent, with Nina's guitar offering a more mellow sound than just an acoustic accompaniment. The newer tunes blended in well. I'm glad someone else has posted a set list, because I'm useless at that, but Lucy seemed in great voice and very relaxed. She played from 9.15 till just past 11. Towards the end, when Nina returned (she had taken a break) they were joined by one of Lucy's pals who played ukulele, bringing some brio to End of the Day. I particularly enjoyed Broken Things, which has long been a favourite. My wife Joy felt the first half of the show had a little too much in the way of beaty numbers, she prefers the more mellow stuff, but I think Lucy made up for that later. Unlike a lot of you however, we think the Pi song has outstayed its welcome, and irritates us! I have to admit the audience loved it though, damn! Another feature, new for us, was Lucy accompanying a couple of tunes on piano, which also gelled well. Have they got a piano at The Renfrew Ferry? Roll on December and Lucy's, thankfully, now annual visit to Glasgow. Bigger venue, can't be bad. And those of you who find yourselves in LA over a weekend, visit McCabe's, please! This is what al small venues should be like! Did I mention that the sound was excellent, clear and well balanced? Have you got the impression we enjoyed listening to Lucy at McCabe's? We did, please join us at The Renfrew Ferry! Mine, coincidentally, has included D&T's "Ordinary Town" recently. I'm even learning it in my guitar lessons (hooray for nine chord changes in the last two lines of the chorus!). For a couple of days this week, though, it was David Gray's "Babylon," Mindy Jostyn's "Cedar Lane" and Beth Amsel's "Little Comfort." Peace, Sheila Off to see the sisters Nields tonight and tomorrow!! Three shows in two states in two days.... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Nov 2001 15:30:37 -0500 From: "Paul Rafanello" Subject: RE: [lucy-list] latest addictions "Five In The Morning" was stuck in my head for a long time in 1999.
