No mention of Cheese , Mince or even Mars Bars And for today's recipe .... Found this review of ESD in "HMV Choice" Sep/Oct , under the Country ?! Section , but it's the first review I've seen in a UK mag so far .... "Singer-songwriter Kaplansky's 4th album finds her turning a reflective eye to life's many facets - love and longing , guilt and sorrow , promises and lies , hope and redemption - all wrapped up in 7 original songs & 4 covers. It's attractively acoustic style straddles folk , country and pop all topped by that haunting voice. Indeed , it so entranced Bryan Ferry recently that he invited her to sing on his own forthcoming album. Having won many awards for her previous album TYN , Lucy has retained her original studio line-up bringing with it experience ranging from Bob Dylan and KD Lang to Roxy Music and Steely Dan adding Nashville guitarist/singer/songwriter Buddy Miller to the mix. They tackle the self penned songs with verve while stamping their class on classics by The Louvin Brothers , Jule Miller , Paul Brady , and Lucy's personal hero Steve Earle. Time Out called Kaplansky "A US singer songwriter of rare style and intelligence." - It's hard to disagree" Hey I think they liked it ! Come to think of don't think anyone's posted any other reviews from the US (other than myself from No Depression" - so something else to write about other than you know what . She discussed them at great length saying that she REALLY wanted to buy leather pants and that she had never owned anything like that before. She decided on brown over black she said because brown is considered "the new black" and according to the fashion mags it really is! Basically its because Lucy made such a big deal about the pants that the list now makes a big deal out of them! I am surprised to hear that susan werner wears red pleather pants... seems a bit wild even for her! Although the first time I saw her in concert she was wearing the infamous cheetah shirt and very busy paisley pants and topped it off with a red bandana on her head (also very patterned) so there it is... the basic story of the leather pants. I have only recently found out about what's up with the ricola cough drops.... so don't feel too out of the loop! ~SLL Robert Abalos wrote: Hi, People! I'm a long-time Lucy fan but new to this list. Cabot Extra Sharp is a particular favorite, but a few weeks a go I picked up a small chunk of Grafton 4 year old cheddar that was unbelievable. Here in wine country (sonoma county, ca) there are a lot of small independent cheesemakers, folk cheesemakers if you will, who make great specialty cheeses. Among my favorites are Teleme, Carmody, Gianna and Breeze. There are also at least a dozen goat cheese makers in Northern CA who make great chevre. Mince sounds like a fairly close relative to the Shepherd's Pie my mom used to make. She also made something called hamburger gravy, which was ground beef browned with onions, salt and pepper and thickened to a gravyesque consistency with flour and then served over mashed potatoes. I guess this might be considered a poor person's version of mince. Please excuse my interruption of the cheese and mince thread. I have some Lucy content. I saw her last week at the Powerhouse here in Sebastopol with the fabulous, most amazing Nina Gerber. It was a really nice show, as usual. Sorry I didn't keep a set-list. However, the most hilarious moment was when she said being there was like her b-day and x-mas rolled into one, then followed by the disclaimer that she was Jewish. She said that she had heard that everyone in Sebastopol was Jewish. Someone yelled out, "Jews and the Wannabes" which cracked Lucy up. She also said that it would be a great name for a band. I thought this was particularly funny because an Israeli friend of mine who I used to work with was quite fascinated with the how the Black kids we worked with would accuse the white kids of being wannabes. When I told him I was a wannabe Jew (I'm not joking here, my dad was a shabbat's (sp?) goy, guess it's in the blood) he cracked up. He also introduced me to his father and the moyle (sp?) at his son's briss by saying, "this is my friend Peter, he's a wannabe Jew." Maybe I could be in a band with Lucy!
