Nanci (ESD?) Griffith is headling this year, an apparent make up date for her canceled Sept 12 show. The sense of drama is building already. One wonders how these two women are getting along these days, will Nanci bring Lucy out to sing during her set, will the Divine Ms G correctly enunciate "Kaplansky" if she introduces Lucy? Should be an excellent festival, but Lucy will likely only get about 20 minutes to perform. But it's a good gig for Lucy, who inexplicably never draws as well at the Ark as she should. I predict she'll easily win over enough of the uninitiated with her set to pack the Ark on her next visit. Complete lineup: Ann Arbor Folk Festival Hill Auditorium 1/26/02 Nanci Griffith Doc Watson & David Grisman Greg Brown Melissa Ferrick Austin Lounge Lizards Lucy Kaplansky Eric Bibb Sons of the Never Wrong Annie Gallup Matt Watroba & Robert Jones, MCs hope some of you can make it, Steve Hale ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 12:43:52 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: [lucy-list] Need some feedback Ok I need some feedback here, and the list is dead so I thought now would be a good time :) Last night, the person that head up our folk group here in my town told me they're cancelling next season (Lucy and Richard included :( ) because he needs time off, something I completely understand. If and when they start up again (that isnt a firm yes) he won't be involved. I have always wanted to go into the music business and I've been working with him for the last few months on the other shows in a minor way. Well after he told me that last night, I spent a long time talking with the opening act for Dave and Tracy, Brian Joseph (an incredibly talented, sweet guy who has opened for Lucy a couple times). He basically has been the first person to tell me that I CAN do what I want in life and that he believes in me. So much that he's going to help me out. Anyways...to make a long story short...I just emailed the head of the folk group saying that I want to try to take over as much as I can. It's not even so that I can have Lucy come (although if I could make that happen for my first show that would rock!) because he already called her yesterday and told her the situation. The thing is, I'm only 22 years old and I have only co-produced 1 show before. I am seriously thinking about dropping out of grad school after next year (i have a sort-of contract signed through my Masters) and doing this for a living and this would be a great experience. Am I getting myself way over my head here?? I'm not looking to try to step right into his shoes because i'd fall flat on my face, but I LOVE music and I am totally passionate about this. There is a whole board of directors for this folk group so it's not like I'd be alone, and we have some great connections and a strong artist listing. There isn't really soemone to put as much effort into it as he has up to this point ...except me. So I guess what I want is feedback. What do you guys think about this. If, for example, something like this happened to your local folk producing group and someone like me came along and said they'd take over. I really want to get an idea whats gonna happen, what kinda of reaction I'm up against. Sorry for babling... Kristen www.angelfire.com/folk/lucykaplanskyGet more from the Web. You sound passionate about the music and this is what you wanted to do. I don't see why you can't do this other guys job. You probably would not fall flat on your face! Why do you think that? Like you said, there is a board. And this guy who is taking off would most likely teach you the ropes if he truly cares about what he was doing and wants to continue a good thing. It sounds more like a time issue than a difficulty issue. I would be thrilled if a 22 year old wanted to take a position like this. You are an adult but you have passion and youthful energy. The only thing that concerns me is the school issue. I hate to see people drop out and would hope that you don't close that door behind you.
