Atmospheric layers of reverb and percussion give "Every Single Day" the feel of a Daniel Lanois production, without overwhelming the sly pop-folk songs. Kaplansky's voice is well-suited to this sort of treatment. Soft and lovely, it has a bit of a kick to it that you only notice later- sort of like a smooth, sweet hot chocolate with chili. Kaplansky co-writes excellent songs with her husband, and always shows fine taste in covers. Here, her version of Julie Miller's "Broken Things" stands out, as does the album's closer, the Louvin Brothers' classic, "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 23:49:18 -0400 From: "Pat Grismore" Subject: [lucy-list] Dayton Show The Doc sounded great, looked great, and seemed to be in great spirits last night at Canal Street. And I finally got her to play "No Place to Fall" , but I had to guilt her into it. She came out for her first of two encores and announced that someone had requested Guinivere and were there any other requests. A few others were shouted out, she said "Anyone else, now's the time", so I yelled "How about that Townes Van Zandt song?" The title had momentarily eluded me. Just like last year when I requested it, she whipped around and demanded "Who said that?" When I raised my hand she asked "Have you heard me do that song before?" I answered with " You asked me that the last time I requested it and I STILL haven't heard it." She felt guilty then and said "I don't know if I can do that or not oh what the hell, you're a nice person." She explained that it was a song By Townes Van Zandt that she had never recorded, but maybe she would in the future, and that it was the most perfect Love Song. Then she went on to just nail it! After the song she said "Wow, thanks for asking for that." When she came back for the second encore, she said "I think I left my body on that last song" Then someone talked her into playing Broken Things, another great rendition. Earlier, she played a song on piano that she said she never performs. It sounded real familiar, but I can't place it. Maybe a Crowded House/Neil Finn song? My MD ran out in the middle of the song, but some of the lyrics I can make out went like this.... You may feel, blah bla blah , but that won't keep you warm at night She may feel..... I talked to her briefly after the show, had her sign my ESD and gave her a water based marker, she was using a dreaded Sharpie. Another great show. Were there any other listers there? ESD is good , but it dosen't raise the bar. Of course LK musician turned psychologist turned musician again still tells us more about ourselves than we really care to hear. And she (along with co-writer and husband RL) still does it in the direct language of someone who has helped more than a few clients face the truth. The problem is the albums stylistic indecisiveness , hardly a quality you'd associate with LK. The record settles down about halfway through , but until then LK seems to be searching for the groove , like a therapist trying to force a solution instead of letting it emerge in it's own good time. The songs don't always hang together well , but there are plenty of memorable moments on the album , including the incisive title track. And the Millers make an appearance : Buddy sings backup on the humourisly obsessive "Don't Mind Me" and LK covers Julie's "Broken Things". LK does a nice version , but Julie remains the all time champ of fragility" What a load of *?+! , or what ?
