This cd is a gem(as expected). Order your copy from Red House or buy it at Lucy's shows if you can't wait until the 11th. Donna ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 11:16:52 -0500 From: "Timothy Bruce" Subject: [lucy-list] It's not "Every Single Day" you get THIS in your mailbox! Bob da man! Bob Feldman my hero! I can't believe my good fortune, but I got my copy of Every Single Day in the mail yesterday and I didn't even think it would be shipped until early September! So I'll be transported this weekend, visually by the full moon and acoustically by Lucy's magical voice. This album has got a lot to talk about, that's for sure! But I'm at work and have only heard it through a-time-and-a-half so I don't think I can really critique it song-by-song. But a few comments to start the action. We are always sorta shocked by how the songs we've heard over the past year or so done solo acoustic get "developed" in the studio. This album is no exception! It is so rich that some of the songs even sound like Emmy Lou Harris covers of the Lucy acoustic originals dancing around in our heads up 'til now. In fact, the title track could even pass for an Emmy Lou song! I do not consider this a bad thing. The only song that really resembles Lucy's working version is the opening track "Written On the Back of His Hand". If I read the liner notes correctly, it is the only song Lucy actually plays guitar on. The rest she just sings and leaves the guitar parts (including those which were her own) to the serious guitar slingers, of whom it can probably be said actually KNOW her well (personally as well as musically). Lucy mentioned at a show last year that the high caliber of guitar work she was putting on the new album may make it harder for her to do these songs live solo, thus she was trying to work more of them up for her to accompnay on piano. I think that would be great! The package is quite quite attractive. It's full of very lush and provocative photos of our Lucy, (who most of us have met and can confirm is an actual down-to-earth human being). She obviously had not just got out of a rental car after a 300 mile drive to a gig before taking these photos! She related at Falcon Ridge that she had a professional help with the make-up and hair. It was money well spent--they certainly have a "star" quality about them. One issue: When I first saw the CD cover at CD Now a couple weeks back I worried that the only place to write anything on the booklet would be on Lucy's face on the front of the CD (perish the thought!). Alas, that appears to be the case. Still, there is an alternative. If you take out the disc, then carefully remove the plastic CD holder with a point or sharp edge you can remove the sheet normally behind the CD which has a neutral grey photo of a wall . If you have the inclination to have Lucy personalize this disk, then that is my recommendation. Take that page out during the show before you get to the meet and greet. I love the music on this CD! The guitar work is lush, vibrant, and sometimes brooding in a shimmering sort of way. Some hearkens musically to "A Child's Hands" from TYN, which is a song I liked enough to get on the air here in Minneapolis. Lucy's voice is outstanding and her choices of backing vocalists superb. "No More Excuses" has softened its harsh edges somewhat and now has a George Harrison "lilt" to it. We will probably exchange opinions on this, but the "radio airplay" song could turn out to be the title track, which very few of us actually heard her perform on the folk circuit this past year, perhaps because she only wrote the words with Duke Levine writing the music. This album could definately be the basis of a band tour around the country if it the logistics of Duke, Larry, and Jon could be worked out. SharonG was right about the Emmy Lou "feel" to it. Emmy Lou is a star. With this CD, Lucy really seems to stand on the threshold to that kind of "star"dom. She should be VERY proud of the work whe's done on this. It is very impressive. Hi, I am new to this list....If you could recommend buying one Lucy disc....which would it be and why?<<<< Hey, Barry, welcome to the list! Well, I love all of Lucy's three "priors" but this one IS a no-brainer. You should buy the one coming out September 11th, "Every Single Day". A year from now, we can all start debating again which of the four is our personal favorite, but THIS is the one of the hour; the one this list will be discussing for some time; the one in the media and over the airwaves; the one Lucy will be featuring in her live shows. We have been discussing ways we as fans can best "launch" Lucy's new CD. Well, the best launch is always strong initial sales. As I stated earlier in the day, this is an extremely good CD that expands, for Lucy, the boundaries of "contemporary urban folk". If you're looking for songs to learn and cover on your own, this may not be the best place to start. But for sheer listening pleasure you won't go wrong with it. ETimothy (PS Your an Ellis Paul fan? You'll be doubly pleased. *grin* ESD, IMHO, is her best so far (as is usually the case with new albums)... but 10YN has what seems to be a lot of "classic" Lucy... stuff that at least _I_ "associate" her with. btw... _MY_ ESD is signed in the first page of the booklet... a little note written in the margins between songs... makes me laugh. :) Lucy said she _would not_ sign on her face. :) Oh... and btw#2... I've been a lurker around her so far, but some of you know me from other lists. The compact disc does not "wear" from the Sharpie or similar alcohol/solvent based markers; the ink soaks through the delicate top layer and progressively discolors the substrate and/or dye layer, introducing errors into the bitstream on some players. Instead.. of.. arguing.. for.. arguments.. sake.. :) I recommend visiting Staples, grabbing a box of water based CD markers, using them, and bringing them to gigs as commonsense gifts to performers, so that more people can enjoy more music for more years to come. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 17:30:26 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] where would you sign it thanks libby.. if you didnt remind me.. id be blue and out of breath... and still playing every single day.. sharon whenever you're ready to light a match and burn some bridges try to dance on a narrow ledge thats way to high whenever youre ready to give it up or just give in the more you lose the more you win in spite of all your plans it always been out of your hands mary chapin carpenter ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 17:36:53 -0500 From: ericj@ruraltel.net (E Johnson) Subject: Re: [lucy-list] where would you sign it Hi Everybody, Another newbie here. Lucy plays her acoustic guitar on THREE of the selections according to the liner notes. The opening and closing tracks (Written On the Back... and The Angels Rejoiced....) as well as the duet with John Gorka (Song For Molly). No reason to panic. Lucy is in my opinion a VERY serviceable guitar player (miles beyond me!) and she can do what those other three can't: SING while playing in front of a live audience. - ------ http://USFamily.Net/info - Unlimited Internet - From $8.99/mo! ------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 17:44:06 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] where would you sign it Look at all the newbies...way to pull them in Lucy!!!
