Since tickets usually max out at 20 dollars does that mean an artist can be booked for only two thousand (or less assuming that the tickets may be less and that the venue probably gets a significant chunk)<<< A very large number of the venues that these artists play are well under a hundred people. And because they are coffeehouses or other informal stages, the prices are usually $7.00 - $15.00...not often much more than that. So do the math. I'm sure you can get Lucy for under $2,000 bucks for a show like yours. I think the booking agency (www.flemtam.com) sets the fee based in part on the size of the venue and the expected attendance. I've never seen Lucy in Minneapolis for a crowd less than 400. It's tough to be part of a meet and greet after a show that large--that's why I so much enjoy travelling to see her. To get the more reasonable fee, you'll certainly have to grab her on one of the weekends when she is swinging though your part of the country and has some other shows booked. I won't pretend to know any more about the costs and contracts associated with this business. Except that most of these artists are as flexible as they are hardworking. And I admire them all greatly. All of them. If they only knew how much their travels and performances brightened and inspired our lives. How about a mosaic made up of all kinds of fan sort of stuff (programs, ticket stubs, Lucy photos, festival wristbands, newspaper ads or reviews, etc.) that we would mail to a central location. The top of the rocket (the "payload") would be a depiction of the CD itself. So we help to "launch" it! Either SharonG or I could assemble it. I would certainly love to do it but I could not deliver it in person until December 1st when she returns to this part of the country. Sharon might be able to do it the week of the release. I'm sure Red House would forward it to her for me, though, as they're just down the road from me. Let's not shoot the rocket too high, though. We want it to orbit the EARTH, not Jupiter! I was going to suggest something like that only on top of that we could all place messages in the book, letters or notes from each of us telling her what her music means to us, pictures of us with her, etc. Actually i was planning on doing that for her birthday but we can do it for the release instead. I'd be happy to help out as well. I could put a message up on my website with a form to fill out. We did this for Tori Amos and we were able to put it together in a few weeks and that was with thousands of us. I think it would work. - ----- Original Message ----- From: Timothy Bruce Sent: Wednesday, August 15, 2001 9:40 AM To: lucy-list@smoe.org Subject: [lucy-list] Now here's a real "launch" idea! I think they did that for TYN, didn't they? And there's more profit in it this way for the artist and those closest to them, right? Bob! Bob! Are you out there listening? Wow...i've gotten 7 emails from people on the list asking me to put up a form on my website so everyone can leave messages for Lucy to put in a book or whatever like Timothy mentioned. So if everyone is cool with that I will do so. Tonight I"ll put a form up on www.angelfire.com/folk/lucykaplansky so if people want to leave a message for Lucy-congratulating her on her new album, to tell her how her music affects you, to tell stories of her shows or meeting her...whatever!! I like Timothy's idea of putting together tickets, pictures, show announcements, etc, etc... then we can put it together for her. KristenGet more from the Web.
