Looks like 11th September in the UK too, Donald - see http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/everysingleday.htm >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lucy Kaplansky - Every Single Day In March 1999, we made Lucy's 'Ten Year Night' release our album of the month, and with this new release she becomes the first artist to have a second album used as our lead item. Her new album, 'Every Single Day' is a superb mixture of her own songs and a few well-chosen covers, including a sublime reading of Julie Miller's 'Broken Things'. As ever, her voice is warm and easy to listen to, and the quality of the musicians and production is truly exceptional. 'Every Single Day' has a heavyweight line-up, with Larry Campbell, Richard Shindell, John Gorka, Jennifer Kimball and Buddy Miller amongst the players, but it's definitely Lucy who takes centre stage. The eleven songs are a clever and attractive mix of acoustic and fuller sounding tracks, but the common feature is the fact that they are all full of memorable hooks; it's a disc with the melodic charms of good pop music, but with the musical and lyrical depth you'd expect from a good singer/songwriter - a perfect combination. Highlights abound throughout the disc, and each listen uncovers something new to enjoy, but the definite standouts are the title track and 'Crazy Dreams', these two tracks emphasise the best qualities of the disc perfectly - great vocals and musicianship across two contrasting styles, one perfect radio material, the other a quiet reflective number. Over the course of her four albums, Lucy has improved on each previous release, and this disc is no exception - it's an album full of contrasts and subtlety, and it's all delivered in her disarming and understated style. This is a disc from a singer/songwriter at the very top of her game; it's an easy disc to listen to, with excellent melodies and smart production, but has huge depth both musically and lyrically. #13.49 (released 11th September) Samples http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/audio/written.ram http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/audio/crazy.ram http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/audio/brokenthings.ram http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/audio/stillstanding.ram http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/audio/everysingle.ram ORDER EVERY SINGLE DAY - RECEIVE A FREE RED HOUSE RECORDS COMPILATION DISC * We have 200 free Red House discs to give away with copies of 'Every Single Day' - these are full commercial titles that feature tracks by artists on the Red House roster, including Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, Cliff Eberhardt, Greg Brown, Chuck Brodsky and more. I live in the Tampa area, but was up in NYC for a few days, and of course could not resist making a day trip up to Hillsdale on Saturday, July 28th (man, it's horrible to drive back at night on the Taconic with no street lights, after a fourteen hour day). I can't say my experience of Lucy's performance was all that great, because I was so far away from the stage, being a lowly day-tripper and all. I would have loved to get to talk to her; she does not make Florida appearances very often. The time I spoke to her, it followed a small performance at the Palm Beach Jewish Community Center. Little did we know then that that spot would determine the future of democracy in this country, which recollection should have provoked a laugh from Lucy, I'd think (I guess that concert was not good luck). I also saw what had to be the best of the CryX3 performances, in Tampa, with Buddy Mondlock and a SURPRISE appearance by Richard Thompson. I just wanted to brag about that one more time... Anyhow...I did get closer for the "Nod to Bob" performance on the workshop stage Saturday afternoon (I got a nice sunburn, figures, a Floridian getting a sunburn in NY...). I have a question regarding this for anyone who attended. Did anyone write down a set list of who played what? For example, as on the CD, Lucy played "It Ain't Me Babe" (sacrilege to say so, but I agree with her mom that her version is better than the original). I did not, but now desperately need one, as I've been asked to write something on it for a Bob Dylan newsletter. If anyone can help, or at least remember some of the performers and their songs, I'd be most appreciative (yes, I know, I can check the rebroadcast if it becomes necessary). Thanks (I already asked the same on the dar-list)! ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V3 #167 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
