Nancy and I visited the new Best Buy store at Dulles Town Center (near our house) yesterday. I came away with several questions: 1. Who was the idiot who put the bluegrass records in the blues section? I'll admit that both forms are traditional, American and formulaic, but that's about all they have in common. Does the guy who put these two together even know the difference? 2. Was it the same guy who spelled out the individual artists' names? Poor Lucy is listed as Lucy Karlansky. They had one copy of TYN in stock. This was only one of many, many spelling errors in the artists' names. I know I shouldn't complain too loudly because most retail stores don't carry any of the artists I like to listen to. But this store allegedly stocks one of the best collections of recorded music available at prices that are substantially discounted compared to the "name" book and music stores. Yet Best Buy has has no folk section as such. Of the thousands and thousands of titles the store carries, the folk section (when we finally found it) consisted of about three rows of discs jammed in between country and blues. We did notice artists like John Prine listed under Rock and R&B. There is a separate World Music category that was 50 percent Reggae adn 50 percent Celtic. Best Buy surely could reorganize its stock to create a larger collection of folk music that makes more sense. We didn't buy any CDs there, but we found a larger -- and cheaper -- collection of folk titles at the CDepot in College Park Saturday. We bought seven records (some used and out of print titles), including the Christine Lavin singer-songwriter compilation, Vol. 2, still in the wrapper for $11.99 for a two-disc set. Take that, Best Buy. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 18:34:32 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] youre still standing there.. lyrics.. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You're Still Standing There (Steve Earle) I've spent my life following things I cannot see And just when I catch up to them, they slip away from me I've been down a thousand trails I've never walked before I found out that without fail, they lead me to your door And the world keep turning round and round It leaves me hanging in the air My heart keeps turning upside down And you're still standin' there Lately I see all the signs, I feel it in the wind The same thing happens every time that you come back again I admit that there are nights when I sit up and cry But sometimes I turn out the lights and pray you'll pass me by Since you're gone my empty arms have nothing left to hold And your memory cannot keep me warm but it never leaves me cold ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V3 #129 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
