In response to your excellent review of SC and MCC, Matt, I thought I would let you know that her band consists of John Jennings on bass, the great Dave Mattacks (formerly Fairport Convention) on drums, Duke Levine on guitar, Steve Nathan on piano but I can't for the like of me remember the other guitarists name. It was obviously much the same set as in Glasgow except for baby Carly making an appearance. In Shawns defence I know what it is like trying to tune with new strings in front of an audience and sometimes it only gets worse the harder you try. When she does get the darn thing tuned she is amazing. She uses some wonderful tunings and is no slouch on the old geetar. Heading off to see Shaky (Neil Young) tonight. Getting ready for some serious "rack n roll". Ian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 10:15:45 -0400 From: "Pat Grismore" Subject: RE: [lucy-list] There's something about Mary... Short for Caledonia. > In response to your excellent review of SC and MCC, Matt, I thought I would > let you know that her band consists of John Jennings on bass, the great Dave > Mattacks (formerly Fairport Convention) on drums, Duke Levine on guitar, > Steve Nathan on piano but I can't for the like of me remember the other > guitarists name. John Carroll did, indeed, play piano, not Steve Nathan. The other guitarist, featured to great effect on the string-bending solo of In The Name Of Love, is Kevin Barry. Shawn's problems with tuning have dogged her throughout the tour. MCC has a fresh guitar every song, so didn't suffer. > The election stuff led up to Stones in the Road, the first line > being "When we were young we pledged allegiance, every morning of our > lives". This was ironic because, crazily, our country just > elected a party whose leader would rather wipe his arse on our flag > than pledge allegiance to it. But I digress. Nothing crazy going on here, Matt. Whilst I would opine that there wasn't much of a choice, under the circumstances the correct government got in. I hold no great admiration for Tony Blair, but his patriotism is not in question, and your remarks are base and offensive. Short for Caledonia. Thanks for the clarification, I wasn't sure I'd heard it correctly. Also, on the subject of names, it's been pointed out to me that Mary Chapin does not like being called just "Mary", and it is in fact a double barrelled first name (with no hyphen). > Shawn's problems with tuning have dogged her throughout the tour. MCC has a > fresh guitar every song, so didn't suffer. The problems didn't really bother me TBH. Some people seemed to think it was a bit unprofessional from the comments around me (which seemed nasty rather than jokey), you can't really win in that situation, do you play slightly out of key and get rapped for that or do you make sure it all sounds right and risk the ire of the audience for causing delays? > Nothing crazy going on here, Matt. That's the kind of stuff I'd usually think twice about sending but didn't edit the message at all due to the lateness of the post. I apologise if anyone else was offended. I disagree with your remarks on the patriotism though, if you (or anyone else) wants to try and convince me otherwise I'll happily converse off list. Sorry to cause trivia limbo. I have this new job that is 4 days on, 3 days off and I don't work with a computer (yes, they still have those jobs), so my on-line life slows down Thurs-Sat. Anyway, I figured that someone must have also listened to the archived show where Irving played lulu's back in town and heard her say she was heading down to Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz and then up to Geyserville (I actually live in Sebastopol, but close enough) for a house concert. On to the next question.
