Due to the fact that we were all being effectively asked to leave the house by my brother who was having friends around for a BBQ, coupled with my original plans for tonight being scuppered, around 2 hours before the show was due to start I started making phone calls to see if I could get a ticket. Most of the ticket sellers had sold out. So I rang the venue direct and yay! There were some returns so I snapped one up and with time running low, pedalled furiously to get to the venue on time. Luckily for me the M25 has had most of the cones removed after 6months of roadworks, I zoomed around to Hammersmith in under an hour, around half the time it can take on week day mornings. Having previously worked in Hammersmith for over a year I know the area pretty well (most of it's a dive), but found a road I new would be free to park on and relatively safe. The venue is an old theatre although I believe it has been refurbished in recent years. It was just the right size for this kind of gig, not intimate but not intimidating either. Shawn Colvin opened, I'm not hugely familiar with her stuff - at least I thought I wasn't - but was I very impressed. She had some major tuning issues with her new strings, towards the end of the concert when they played an encore together, Chapin leaned over and tuned her guitar for her much to the amusement of the audience. I sensed the audience was getting a little peeved with the amount of time it was taking to get this right and Chapin dealt with it like a true professional taking some of the heat off Shawn. I was surprised how much of Shawn's material I'd heard before, mostly not realising it was her singing. I'll be seeking out her albums without out a doubt and look forward to a solo tour. If we get the duet album that they plan on recording together we'll be in for real treat, these two together work just like Lucy and Dar. After Shawn's set with a guest appearence from her daughter Carly (2 and a half), who gave us London Bridge is Falling Down and something else that I didn't recognise. There was a brief interlude before the star of the show came on. At the same time the 3 seats next to me were filled by three noisy old men who smelt of cigarettes and alcohol and who had not put in an appearance for Shawn's set. Their loss. They proceeded to talk through the beginning of the first 3 songs, the people infront shook their heads, the people behind looked on disapprovingly, I'd had enough and I said something. One apologised and they shutup. Result. After the next song two of them left. *BIG* result. Unfortunately, they came back 5 songs later, but were mostly quiet. Two things annoy me at gigs, late arrivals and noisy talkers. They were both. I don't need to know what every bit of kit on the stage is (this is what they were mostly describing to each other). They also played air guitar and made like they were beating drums. Nuff said. Mary rocked. She is a rock chick. This ain't country. Her band were fantastic, I wish I could remember their names. The set was a brilliant mix of stuff from the new album and older songs. We got I Take My Chances, Late for your Life, Whenever You're Ready, Shut Up and Kiss Me, Passionate Kisses, in all an hour and three quarters of everything you'd expect and a load of stuff you wouldn't (including Back Street Boys). Last November they were over here recording the new (current) album, Chapin remarked how this was good because they'd missed the US election and a choice between a crap party and a crappier one. She related it to our election this week which got a cheer, then regarding the politicians she said they were all wankers anyway which got an even bigger cheer. She likes that word. I like they way she uses it! I understand she first used the word in Hammersmith (at the Lyric theatre down the road) which is why it got several mentions tonight. The election stuff led up to Stones in the Road, the first line being "When we were young we pledged allegiance, every morning of our lives". This was ironic because, crazily, our country just elected a party whose leader would rather wipe his arse on our flag than pledge allegiance to it. But I digress. MCC and Shawn have one last gig in the UK at Croyden Fairfield Hall, I urge anyone whose not seen them yet and doesn't have tickets to try and get some. You will not be dissapointed. This is an extremely slick show by excellent musicians and Mary and Shawn work well together on stage, they have a good rapport and their banter adds to the act. Don't miss them when they come to your town.
