Good to see you last night Jenny. Great gig was it not. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 18:58:30 +0100 From: "donald.anderson" Subject: [lucy-list] Shawn Colvin - Glasgow - 30th May 2001 Sorry I know I'm crossing lists here but frankly I've had more communication going about Shawn with my Lucy Listers than Shawns ! This was Shawns first time in Scotland since June of 1997 when she played to a packed crowd of about 500 in a club in Glasgow called The Arches . Tonight though Shawn was on the stage where she really belongs the beautiful Glasgow Royal Concert Hall , sharing the bill with her friend Mary-Chapin Carpenter. Chapin is a very frequent visitor to Scotland and every time she brings along a real class act as her support - 92 Lucinda Williams / 95? John Gorka / 99 Catie Curtis and in 2001 surpasses herself by bringing along Shawn to share the audience exposure she truly deserves. Hey , who knows maybe Lucy will get the next gig .... On arriving at the theatre I went straight to the merchandise desk , and guess what ... you could have any Chapin Tee Shirt you wanted , but not a thing was available that bore the name of Ms Colvin Shawn appeared solo , and the set list , as best as I can remember it ! ... Anywhere You Go Trouble Shotgun Whole New You A Matter Of Minutes Nothing Like You Wichita Skyline Sunny Four Seasons In One Day w / MCC Someday w / MCC Round Of Blues Encores after Chapin's set : all duets with Chapin One Cool Remove I'll Be Back That's The Way That Love Goes Great night - come back again soon As for Chapin's set , she was up for pushing her new album (Time Sex Love) big time - we got 8 songs out of an approx 16 song set (excl the encore duets with Shawn) The first three songs she sang were all from the new album - not many artists would have been that brave - This new material though sounds like some of the best stuff she's done in a very long time - Check it out , you won't be disappointed. Her band , as always , are superb with Jon Caroll on Piano , John Jennings On Bass / Duke Levine On Guitar - Wow ! / Dave Mattacks on Drums , and Benny ? on Guitar Now talking of disappointments , I had hoped to meet up with Ian / Iain / Walter & Jenny , fellow Lucy Listers but despite searching that square bar for a man with a white cross on his chest , no luck - maybe next time ...? Oh , nearly forgot Shawn had a joke for us - "What do you get when you cross a Mobster with A Scotsman ?" - Answer "An Offer You Can't Understand" If anyone recorded the show I'd appreciate if you would get in touch privately Donald , Kintore , Aberdeenshire ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 00:07:33 +0100 From: "jenny" Subject: [lucy-list] the BIG venues Okay first off, thanks to everyone who's asked how i am. yes, the frog ended up in the emergency room (or casualty as we call it over here), the scooter and the car are both written off, and Ian, i was NOT the one driving too fast, considering the fact i have a restrictor at 30mph. i missed my higher history exam yesterday which sucks, but in another way such an encounter puts things in perspective. anyway, that's enough... so i got to shawn and chapin last night on my own legs, minus my mum. i wasn't going to post about the show... this being the lucy list...but seeing how someone else did and i have a different view...then why the hell not. SO i hadn't seen shawn before. i've heard her music since before i can remember cause my dad was a big fan of 'steady on' and 'a few small repairs', but refused to take me to king tuts the time shawn was playing. fair enough, i was only 10 or something. so i didn't really know what to expect last ngiht. > Tonight though Shawn was on the stage where she really belongs the beautiful Glasgow Royal Concert Hall This is where i would have to disagree, i like most of the songs on shawn's new album and i like the way they are put together with the band. most artists are, however, also able to communicate the songs in a solo-acoustic way.. i don't think these new songs held up well at all in such a big venue... It's funny how everyone asssociates success with the size of venue an artist is playing or whatever...but really, in my mind the progression from small intimate club to such a sterile, huge hall with a few thousand balnk faces staring back at you, motionless, except for the occassional arthritic hand tapping its arthritic knee, must be an enormous let down for a performer who has spent years building their talent and getting so much feedback and support from their audience and really nothing brilliant to shout about. This is where my lucy content comes in... who gets more out of an evening of performing? As for chapin, the new songs sounded great... could somebody check their liner and find the name of the studio the album was recorded in?? nice to see everyone at the show, even if i did hop back up those stairs rather fast, ian, walter and joy... see you sometime. jen* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 19:10:10 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] mary chapin - Glasgow - 30th May 2001 So Donald.. did you get me a teeshirt...or the frogged one.. or dave did you and Kay remember you amerikan friend.. damn.. im gonna have to get my own... sharon the original party doll or you could be the one who takes the long way home roll down the windows shut off the phone see your life as a gift from the great unknown and your task is to receive it. mary chapin carpenter ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 20:06:09 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] the BIG venues Sir George martin's air studios.. in london notice that abbey road vibe... thatta girl froggy.. miss school.. make the concert.. miss work show up at that show.. you are my child.... sharon or you could be the one who takes the long way home roll down the windows shut off the phone see your life as a gift from the great unknown and your task is to receive it. mary chapin carpenter ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V3 #117 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
