I'll be brief and not do a set list so as to avoid 1) being repetitive and 2) screwing up any more of Sharon's potential trivia questions. (I am officially regular list, no digest as of tonight, though, so there shouldn't be any danger!). Lucy did the two shows with exactly the songs (understandable, because that's what happens with band shows), but I was still glad to have gone to both...Lucy is just about the only one from whom the same songs and stories twice in a row on the same night can still sound fresh. I always start out with mixed feelings about band shows, partly because I love seeing Lucy solo so much and I know that some of my favorites that are rare now in solo shows (Still Life, My Name Joe, This Is Mine...) will be nonexistent in band shows. I also tend to worry that the band will make Lucy's voice too hard to hear...I think the balance was actually pretty good tonight in that regard, at least for Lucy's sets. (Buddy and Julie Miller's band, ended up seeming way too loud at many points, although I liked Buddy and Julie a lot more than I had expected...this was my first time seeing them live.) Anyway, Lucy's band is good, and she's so happy and energetic playing with them that even though I love her by herself I can't begrudge her often having them at the expense of acoustic sets when she's at the Bottom Line. A highlight (I mean, along with seeing Sharon and Renee and the rest of the gang and meeting Donna and Bruce for the first time) was when Lucy harmonized on By Way of Sorrow with Julie Miller (with one mysterious alternate chorus---compared to Cry Cry Cry's version, the only one I'd heard before---that I still haven't fully deciphered). It was also fascinating to hear Julie Miller do Broken Things live...I'd only ever heard Lucy do it before, and I loved Julie's version but I wished Lucy could be involved too. Maybe harmony wouldn't have worked well for that song, but even so, I wished Lucy could just come out and sing it separately right after Julie finished! Another highlight for me was Ten Year Night, in both of tonight's shows but especially the second one. I've always liked it and I've never grown tired of it, but I had gotten somewhat...USED to it. Well, tonight, without really altering it in any easily definable way, Lucy made it sound like a completely new song. It was breathtaking...I mean, literally, I don't think I breathed the entire time she was playing it. Now I am going to go through major withdrawal...not seeing Lucy live again until Falcon Ridge will be hard (wait! I forgot the World Trade Center! that's sooner!...OK, I won't complain about lags between concerts because I know I'm lucky to live in NY and see her as often as I do in the first place). Well, at least I hope I can say with impunity that not having the new CD until August is going to be really tough, since I already love the new songs! Sharon and/or anybody else who feels like it, please give whatever synopsis of Bridgeport you can manage for those of us who will be wishing we could be there...and I hope I haven't ruined any more trivia questions!
