The venue is smaller than the Bottom Line but with a somewhat similar setup...tables set up sideways such that no seat is really bad. (For my companions in carlessness, it turns out to be a very pleasant Long Island Rail Road trip from NYC followed by a reasonable walk...the only caveat is that if you want to buy a ticket more than five days early and no one can pick it up for you, you have to send a money order and pay an extra fee.) There's a drink minimum, but at least they're good about letting you know. Lucy was in fine form and obviously enjoying herself. The crowd was very receptive, and clearly a lot of us knew most of the songs...Lucy remarked on how she loved it when people clapped in recognition before she even started singing a song, and she said that she thought she'd been in Bellmore when this had first happened to her. Then, of course, we clapped so hard at the start of the next song (Ten Year Night, I think) that it made her laugh and she had to stop ("I guess I was fishing...but I like it") and start again. Noting our continued enthusiasm, Lucy at one point asked if we could all just come with her everywhere she went, every day...I think we would have been only too happy to comply! The set list, in no particular order (see how I do on this, Sharon): The Angels Rejoiced One Good Reason Ten Year Night Scorpion End of the Day Written on the Back of His Hand Don't Mind Me Song for Molly The Alphabet Song On an Asteroid With You I Know What Kind of Love This Is (several of us agreed that Lucy's version beats the Nields version by far, even though Nerissa wrote it) Guilty as Sin (she forgot the words briefly in the middle, but no one minded and she recovered admirably...and her voice was such that she could have carried it off even if she'd just hummed the rest!) I've Just seen a Face (by request...a real treat, especially for those of us whose CD players will not play the hidden track and who therefore have been forced to drag Flesh and Bone to other people's houses and beg to try their CD players...Lucy mentioned that she had sung this at her wedding) More Than This (preceded by the Bryan Ferry/Ricola story, which I've heard three times now but never tire of) Turn the Lights Back On By Way of Sorrow When encore time came, at least six different songs were shouted out, and Lucy had a hard time choosing; even when she narrowed it down to a runoff between The Tide and Guinevere, the applause in favor of each was equally enthusiastic. Finally we prevailed upon her to do both, first The Tide and then Guinevere ("the really depressing one, and then the slightly less depressing one"). Lucy often varies the way she sings her songs, but it was particularly noticeable in this performance...she sang a lot of the songs from her CDs with slightly different melodic phrasing and emphasis (not sure if this is the musically correct description, but anyone who has heard her in concert, especially solo, should know what I mean). I don't notice this as much with other artists, and Lucy is especially good at these subtle changes, such that even the songs I've heard her sing many times still sound fresh...I think even if she gave a concert by just singing one song over and over in different ways, it would still be completely entertaining! In short, last night's was a great show (not that Lucy does any other kind...) and well worth the trip to and from Bellmore and the exhaustion I will face at work today after only a few hours' sleep! (And thanks again, Sharon and Renee, for the good company and the transportation home!) Now off to spend two days physically at work but mentally preparing for Lucy at the Bottom Line this weekend (which I shouldn't admit, since my boss is on this list too...but I have to hope he'll understand!). Not only did Gwen Macsai & Lucy go to school together, but Gwen wanted Lucy to write some songs/music for the show, but the producers didn't go for it. When I last saw Lucy in Beloit, WI, I excitedly asked her if she knew of the show, and she replied w/the above story. If we all send out good thoughts, perhaps 1) the show won't be cancelled and 2) the producers might reconsider their error re: the theme music. :) ~Kelli ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 10:01:32 -0400 From: "Jeff Bernstein" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] What about Joan (and Lucy?) >If we all send out good thoughts, perhaps 1) the show won't be cancelled "What About Joan?" was renewed for next season earlier this week. Sorry I missed you all last night. I drive past The Brokerage 4 times a day but due to circumstances way beyond my control have been unable to make any weekday shows. I had hoped to get to TBL Saturday, but some friends decided to pick that day to get married. Real life can be such a bitch sometimes. Back to lurkdom... I'm going to the early (7 pm) Bottom Line show in NYC tomorrow. I'm going there straight after work, so I'll be one of the first ones there, I hope! Anyway, I'm going by myself and would love some buddies! I'll be on the line early, and I'm going to post what I look like so people can find me. I'm 24, brown hair & eyes, nose ring, little glasses... Hm, what do I look like? Give me a hello if you're there. Should be a great lineup.
