From a recommendation on this List I had bought her last album, "Johnstown" and my wife and I liked it so much we bought the new one, "Sleepy Little Sailor" as well. We'd recommend both, especially SLS, its not as dark and I think more accessible. Suzie was great. She has a voice full of range and texture, and her songs are well crafted and written. My only criticism is that the lyrics are very, very dark-there's an awful lot of blood, death & general suffering in there. We could do with the odd Pick-me-up Suzie, and just a smidgen of optimism, if you could be so kind! Oh Susanna was playing at a cafi/bar/vegan restaurant called the 13th Note in King St. The restaurant was fine, but the cellar where the gig took place was an absolute disgrace. We couldn't claim any of the limited seating, as the organisers had obviously sold far too many tickets for the capacity of the venue, as it was absurdly crowded. We managed to claim one half of a pillar, from where, by squinting around backs and heads, we could just about see the stage. The heat and lack of air were stifling, and there was a continuous noise and clatter from the bar area and toilets outside the cellar door. This, along with an audience of whom many moved around continuously during songs, and chattered away as well, pretty well ruined the evening for us. Oh Susanna told us she would return in September, to which my wife Joy called out, "Not here, please!", which pretty well sums it up. Verdict for local Listers-if she plays at a better venue, take the time, Oh Susanna is very good indeed. anyone heard the new John Gorka-opinions please Walter from Glasgow ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V3 #88 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
