See you there. Have you got Shawn's new album yet? It was sold out before I got a chance to get my paws on a copy. Ian > SO did I Jenny-great minds think alike! I have been fortunate to see her (and her husband Tom) perform many times, and each time is a blissful experience. Each song a gem, beautifully sung and equally beautifully accompanied by Tom. It's a fun time, I promise. If I haven't yet made myself clear, I urge you come out in droves for Martha's concert. They're glorious, so catch them if > you can. The other day a friend here in London called me up and played me a track, over the phone, from a Rounder compilation album she'd picked up at the Vancouver Folk Alliance - what sounded like a great track by 'Wayfaring Strangers' called 'High on a Mountain' with a wonderful female vocalist who sounded very familiar - there were no details on the compilation, other than their debut album would be released on Rounder in May this year. Doing a search on the Internet, I found this : >>>>>>>>>>> > WAYFARING STRANGERS is an incredible new band that explores the mystical side of American folk music. It features some of the most renowned instrumental virtuosos in America and two of its finest singers. The Wayfaring Strangers will take an audience on an extraordinary journey to the depths of America's soul, with Andy Statman on clarinet and mandolin, Tony Trischka on banjo, Matt Glaser on violin, Bruce Barth on piano, John McGann on guitar, and Jim Whitney on bass. Special guest vocalists are Lucy Kaplansky and Jennifer Kimball. The repertoire of the Wayfaring Strangers draws upon the classic high lonesome sound of Bill Monroe and other traditional folk and bluegrass artists, lacing contemporary jazz harmonies into a deep ethnic groove. Lucy Kaplansky has a voice that will get right to your soul. The sound of the Wayfaring Strangers is built around her extraordinary voice, with its keening melismatic quality. Jennifer Kimball is an extraordinary singer and songwriter who was one half of the group The Story. She is widely regarded as one of the finest harmony singers in folk music today. Andy Statman is a unique force in contemporary music, known as both the finest young American Klezmer musician and one of the world's finest mandolin players. He was a featured guest with Itzhak Perlman on Perlman's In The Fiddler's House documentary and C.D. Tony Trischka is the father of contemporary banjo style, and the teacher and influence of Bela Fleck. His long list of solo albums and appearances with a variety of groups mark him as the most innovative banjo player alive today. Matt Glaser is Chairman of the String Department at the Berklee College of Music. Called by the Boston Herald "America's most versatile violinist", Glaser's stylistic expertise ranges from jazz to bluegrass to various ethnic styles. Bruce Barth has recorded profound jazz piano on a number of his own Enja releases. John McGann's masterful guitar and mandolin can be heard on his solo C.D. on Green Linnet. Jim Whitney is an extraordinary bassist who is comfortable playing virtuosic jazz or deep, soulful bluegrass. > >>>>>>>>>>>>> I'm not sure I know what "keening melismatic quality" means but I agree Lucy's voice is extraordinary. And having seen Jennifer Kimball recently, I would maintain that not only is she "one of the finest harmony singers in folk music today" but also one of the the best singer songwriters, in her own right, that I've seen in a long while. I've written to Rounder about Wayfaring Strangers' album but had no response - if anyone has any details, I'd be really interested.
