Another wonderful night with Lucy (and John Herrington) on Friday. The venue was Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair, NJ. The bill was James Keelaghan, Lucy, and Richard Shindell. James opened, and played a dazzling set of about six songs. Strident and pure, James has a clear voice that draws you in. He has a very easy story-telling style, and my wife and I were dreaming of 13 crosses high above the cold Missouri waters. Right after that, Lucy came out with John Herrington, and played for 68 minutes. New tunes were mixed in with old favorites, and covers. Small Dark Movie Back Of Your Hand End Of The Day Nowhere Don't Mind Me (Play Your Song For Me) Ten Year Night (w/ RS) By Way Of Sorrow (w/ RS) More Than This (Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music cover). John was not on stage for this. He could make a great Phil Manzanara. Time To Go One Good Reason Turn The Lights Back On The Swimming Song Scorpion (w/ RS) E: Speaking With The Angel (w/ RS) Once again, John Herrington made the songs come alive. Contrary to some RS Listers, Lucy should have played longer. She was vibrant, and full of energy. What a great night! Fri in Montclair and Sat in West Creek. Sharon and Paul already posted regarding the Outpost and I'll just add....truly AMAZING!!! Lucy played at a Methodist Church in West Creek, NJ(Exit 58-GSPkwy) on Sat 2/4. The promoters are Hometown Music and they really do a wonderful job. Slaid Cleaves opened the show and he was great. Then came Lucy....she was SUPERB!! This is the set list by memory: The Angels Rejoiced in Heaven Crazy Dreams One Good Reason Edges Broken Things Back of His Hand Guilty As Sin End of The Day Time To Go Don't Mind Me Ten Year Night Irving's-Alphabet Song & Pi Love Is The Ride More Than This(I love the way she sings this song!!!) Scorpion Turn The Lights Back On By Way of Sorrow Encore: Guinevere I could have stayed all night listening to that beautiful voice! As usual she greeted all her fans at the end of the show. Lucy makes everyone feel so special! Her husband, Rick is just as nice as her!! It was an amazing two nights. I can't wait to see her again! By my count, Lucy played 14 songs, Richard played 13 songs. Seems fair enough to me, particularly since the show was a co-bill. What a terrific performer -- wonderful lyrics and a great sense of humor. Love her song Pergatory Cafe. I wish she'd play someplace close to, or in NJ (hear that Outpost in the Burbs). I have been listening to her CDs for over a year and am waiting for the day she's in my area, but I will await that day with patience, and just keep seeing lots of other great performers. Speaking of great performers... I got to see The Burns Sisters, again, on Sat night. What a FANTASTIC show. Tiny venue, but good sized crowd that loved the show. It's rare to see a group that performs such a wide variety of styles, and their voices are perfection, with harmonies to die for. Heard that they are doing the mainstage on Saturday at the Folk Alliance in Canada. Also, the guitarist who backed them up was awesome. See them, seem them, see them. Can't forget to mention I saw Fri's Outpost in Montclair with Lucy, James Keelaghan, and Richard S. I could have listened to James K. forever, and Richard just gets better and better. Richards duets/harmonies with Lucy were heaven. I waw delighted to see that Lisa Gutkin and Greg Anderson of Whirligig, were Richard's special guests for his new recording. Lisa on fiddle made some of Richard's songs truly complete. Here's another strong reccomendation....discover the music of Whirligig (www.whirligig.org). They do Celtic music, but also through in some klezmer, Scandanavian, and other worldly styles, and their featured singer is Lisa Mosciatello (?), whos voice is that of an angel. Sorry, but not too sorry, for taking up so much space. Guess I had a lot to say. All music'd up in NJ, Anne ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 15:04:59 EST From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Montclair & West Creek, NJ and more well lets see that makes it richard, lucy Twice - at montclair and west creek susan werner at appel farm dar in princeton the burns sisters - near heightstown richard at the point.. and who said NJ is nothing but two highways that lead to NY and the delaware water gap.. ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V3 #29 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
