There was a 'Lucy Kaplansky Sold Out' notice on the door, and as soon as Lucy started singing we knew this referred to the tickets, and not Lucy's music, despite her having provided backing for Brian Ferry, whose voice gives me the eebie geebies! On our way in, someone asked me if I had any spare tickets, now that's progress for Lucy, isn't it? Since Lucy's last show at the Ramshorn they have changed the space, so that it is more club like, with churchy overtones. My only complaint was that the main door opened directly into where Lucy was singing and we were sitting, which was irritating. Lucy came out wearing one of those pilot-like jackets with sheepskin collar and cuffs, which she told us she had pinched from her dressing room! She asked the management if she could buy it, so Sharon and you other fashion gurus, is you see Lucy wearing this jacket in NYC, she got it here in Glasgow. I liked the fact there was no support (Jennie must have been relieved) and Lucy's first set was about 50 minutes, and a lovely mixture of old and new. 'Ten Year Night' took on extra meaning as Lucy told us hubby Rick had just showed up-she embarrassed him royally by telling us how happy she was to see him! Our friend Marie remarked that Lucy has become more versatile in the last year, and she is right, this was a more varied, rounded, and confident evening from Lucy. She seemed in particularly good voice as well. I'm no good at song titles, but the new stuff seems very promising. My wife Joy was particularly taken with a couple of new tunes, and they should be even better on the new album. Second half of the show ran for well over an hour. Terrific set, the audience (and Joy)seemed to love the spiel about Irving and mathematics. Frankly it irritates me, 'The End of the Day' was terrific, and Julie Miller's 'Broken Things', sublime (that was in the first half, but what the heck). Lucy's encore were 'Somewhere Out There' for fellow Lister Ian, and 'Mary Magdeline', requested by me because Lucy has not recorded it and its a lovely song. We took along a heap of folks including our 2 kids, a niece and one of their friends. Four other friends, new to Lucy, two liked her, two loved her and bought Ten Year Night. It was a great evening, Lucy just gets better and better. One footnote. While I love to watch Lucy's beautiful music reach a wider audience, on a selfish basis I would hate to see her leave the small, intimate spaces she plays in and move up to the larger halls. This contact she has with her audience is great. When you are standing in line waiting to buy a drink, and Lucy wanders by and says, 'Hi, how are you', we don't want to loose that, do we? Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all fellow Lucy Listers. Lucy was in great form and her Paul Brady "medley" was fantastic. She sure knows how to pick great songs to cover. As for her rendition of Bryan Ferrys "More than this". Well, she certainly made a pretty average song sound bloody amazing. (I too Walter do not rate Mr Ferry the same way as others do). Glad my request for "Somewhere out there" (her second Steve Earle song) was taken up as I was really disappointed she omitted it last year. Nice to see Jenny and Walter again. It has become very apparent that there is a select crowd of people with similar tastes in music here in Scotland. I have been to several gigs within the past year (Lynn Miles with Slaid Cleaves, Kasey Chambers, Emmylou Harris, Iain Matthews and now Lucy) and I have seen these people either in Edinburgh or Glasgow. We keep hoping all this great talent visits our shores as often as possible. Great gig to end the year. Come back soon Dr K. Very nice! Thanks for all those concert reviews, European Lucy-List contingent! Too bad I couldn't make it to the London show as I had hoped, but hearing all about it was great, too. Cheers, Katrin - -------------------------------------------- i do it for the joy it brings because i'm a joyful girl because the world owes me nothing and we owe each other the world ani difranco ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 16:57:39 EST From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] waiting on the jen express thanks walter and ian or iain but the review of the DOC from scotland that i wait for is from the foggy froggy herself when she comes from under that lilypad and decides to write the DOC review.. did she get a pick .. was she the pick of the crowd.. did she get to hang with rick.. did she feed him and be his new friend.. did the doc tawk to her.. did she get doc to say OH my GAWD the fashion report was good. i will look for that new nicked jacket DOC is coming home with royalty checks and clothes and she goes on to ireland.. last year she bought boots in dublin... sharonG ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 23:26:43 -0000 From: "jenny" Subject: [lucy-list] so here's the story okay... I just got home after leaving my house at 10am yesterday morning... WHat a blur... That doc... she was absoloutely amazing... The new songs are absoloutely amazing, the one about her grandmother is heartbreaking... there are new rockers and steve and paul brady and julie miller might make it to the album so keep fingers crossed. There were new 'mom' stories and new dad stories and they were funny as hell... Lucy's ma buying a puter, her dad giving talks at glasgow uni. The audience sang 'i belong to glasgow' in honour of lucy's mum and doc and congratulated her on discovering 'glen morangie' which even i know is the best whisky ever. Rick had just flown in and that was the raunchiest version of the kitchen floor song i ever heard. NUff said really. It was also really nice to hear the tide... i love that song and it rocks like mad live. The church was beautiful, the doc was in crackin form.. she just gets better with every show and more professional too. even more cool and collected that ever. What can i say??? She is just the best...but now i'm gushing... It was nice to see ian and walter with his clan and just so i didn't upset anyone i took thorntons chocolates instead of brownies. ANd also because i never got round to buying brownie mix and i'm too lame to make em. I'm warbling and people willg et annoyed. My only complaint would be how fleeting the doc's visit has been.. .SHe was looking a bit emotional about leaving herself, but i bet she saws that to all the audiences. jenny* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 23:46:13 -0000 From: "Iain Geddes" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucy at the Ramshorn Theatre in Glasgow Well I guess I should chuck in my tuppence worth. As Walter (nice to see you) and Ian said this was a wonderful set from Lucy. Agree regarding the Paul Brady medley. I was all set to have to shout a request for "Crazy Dreams" but no need, Lucy beat me too it. The song about Pi doesn't bother me but having the "Artist Profile" video and seeing Lucy perform with her Dad is much more preferable. She was certainly flattered by the chance to sing with Bryan Ferry, personally I feel he should be the one to feel flattered. The new material sounds very strong and should make for a terrific new album. I particularly liked "Guilty as Sin" and "Don't Blame Me" from the forthcoming Reservation Blues film oh and "Time to Go" following on from the story of her Mother's introduction to computers. I notice none of you guys mentioned the fact that her Mother had asked Lucy to ask the audience about an old Glasgow drinking song which she couldn't remember. Well the audience dully gave her an impromptu rendition of "I belong to Glasgow" even if some of us don't!! We had fun, Lucy rocked, what more can you ask for? Well how about more than once a year :-) Iain (2 i's), Edinburgh. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 19:47:40 -0500 From: "Pat Grismore" Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy's REAL agenda in the UK???
