Thus I never even bothered to write down the play list. I arrived an hour and a half before the show only to find about thirty people in line ahead of me! And the line got longer and longer, growing to well over a hundred before the doors even opened. Of course, it was COLD (-5 degrees C and windy too). The show sold out and I witnessed people turned away. Inside it was Standing Room Only. Probably 450 to 500 people in attendance. I vividly recall that Lucy quickly delivered the two songs that were sorely missed at the Duluth show two nights earlier--opening with "Small Dark Movie" (the Greg Brown tribute selection) and a little later Julie Miller's "Broken Things" so I got my fix right away. About an hour into Lucy's set I went and fetched my five year old, Wolfgang from the drop-in child care we were forced to use because of a lack of a babysitter. That stole nearly a half hour of the 100 minute set. I had told him earlier that he would be seeing Lucy, whom he likes a lot, having seen her on TV (CBS morning show, Survivor, etc.). He even sings along on some of her songs in the back seat of my car. As a toddler, he was with me at my very first Lucy show. I was thrilled that he could take part, groggy as he was. Well, to make a long story short, Lucy saw him seated on my lap out in the audience and dedicated "The Kid" to him. Now wasn't that special! You don't need me to tell you that Nina and Lucy rocked! If only she would jump the pond with Lucy so you islanders could experience it, too. (Probably need larger venues, though, for that bigger electric guitar sound.) Again, Alice Peacock was great (though comments I heard during intermission went something to the effect that her style was hardly unique). Her appearance, smile, and confident aire reminded me of Nerissa Nields, her voice and style of Sheryl Crow. Her songs were solidly written and she did all original material. She played two guitars (both Martins...one Lucy's?) one of them tuned in DADGAD. Maybe as a Flem-Tam artist she'll be showing up out east soon. Definately worth seeing. (Christmas present hint: if anyone remembers what five songs Lucy played just after "Time To Go" (Hey! hey! How appropriate!) they could help me solve that "missing time" mystery which torments me!) Having played "End of the Day" shes now talking about being sad about Gore being beaten (maybe) and the crazy election process. She's just extolled the virtues of Irish Whisky (Powers) and her time with Paul Brady in Ireland last year. Played out with "Five in the Morning" . Congratulations Phil your e-mail was read out and thanks for the reminder of this. I just got home, read the mail and dived for the Radio. I've got some of it taped I hope. But, believe it or not, I got to see a series of still photos of Lucy playing and talking in the studio as it happened. Photo quality was very poor (like a convenience store robbery-cam!) but at least I knew I had got there and that it was happening. I am not one to complain about not having "heard" Lucy lately! Twice in the past week! For those who tuned in, hit the delete key now! An hour in advance they played Return of the Grievous Angel as a taster. Started live at 18.35 GMT. "I'm so happy to be in London...I love London. It's like New York, incredibly cosmopolitan. It's beautiful, not like New York, and interesting. "I spent a fortune getting my doctorate and then decided I wanted to go back to singing. The doctorate has made me much more of an insightful, perceptive person in general. It's made me a better writer. I'm glad I did it and I'm happy where I am now." Then she played a live, solo version of End of the Day. After a compliment about the loudness... "I'm a thrasher...I'm always breaking strings. I don't see the point unless I play hard! (Asked about being a teenager) I was very good until I was 17 and then I rebelled like crazy. I was bad...trouble, trouble, trouble! If you don't (rebel against) your parents, you're repressing stuff." (Asked about US election) "I don't really know if I should say this on air. It seems like Gore has lost and I'm very sad about it. What a disastrous mess! Both are so limited as candidates. (Describing what Bush would be like as President)- Bush will be a mouthpiece for people under him." (A chat about Ireland) "I do really love Dublin...it's a very special place. (So you're friends with Paul Brady?) Yes! (Describes singing live with him on last tour) He asked me to sing with him into the same mike. I thought I'd hyperventilate and faint! (Discussion about drinking Irish whiskey with PB after the show and she couldn't remember the type until producer prompted her) "Powers. That's the one. (Reminded about being away for Christmas) "Christmas in the US is boring...in Dublin it's magic! (Tour mentioned. Confirmed that Channel 4, a UK mainstream TV station, is recording the show at London's Jazz Cafe!!!) Interview ended. Recording of Five in the Morning played. Afterwards dedicated initially to Phil Kinnear! Nice one Phil. Hope this helps, is not too inaccurate, and not too longwinded and boring. Cheers! Good job Brian--thanks for that summary! I think the only things you didn't get were a few comments about how London taxi drivers are more pleasant than those in NY, London doesn't have pipes exhausting steam from the sidewalk, and that London does have road rage, although Lucy said she had not experienced this. I had exchanged a couple of emails w. Sal b, who was reporting on traffic before Lucy came on. And after Lucy finished, the announcer, Johnnie Walker, said hello to me (!!) on the air and read part of my email. Hearing my name on BBC Radio2 was a very nice surprise. Thanks to Alec Buchan for posting the original notice to the list yesterday. Got the whole Lucy bit if anyone wants it although I missed the song they played earlier in the evening as I was still in the car. That wasn't part of the live bit though. It was also reported that the Jazz Cafe show is being taped by Channel 4 so we're gonna be on telly. Is there a meet arranged for Sunday? i haven't been following the list that closely lately. I only booked my ticket today and there are still some available so hurry if you're as slack as I am 'cos I'm betting it'll be packed after tonights broadcast.
