This non-Scottish native (Hi Mari, I'm from Belfast - hope you enjoy the Errigal Inn) had to look up the atlas to see where Glenfarg was and was amazed to see that it is just off the M90 between the Forth Road Bridge and Perth. For some reason I expected it to be in the back end of nowhere either far West or far North. In other words it is closer for any of us from the Edinburgh area than the Glasgow Ramshorn is. Apparently the Bein Inn is just outside Glenfarg and they have a room set aside for "musical happenings". It seats 45 people and they had sold about 30 tickets a week ago when Lesley and I got ours. I still have my ticket for the Ramshorn as well so double Lucy on Saturday and Sunday nights - a nice Christmas present Just a pity I have to be in work at 6:00am the next morning in Edinburgh :-( Are we really the only two from the list going to Glenfarg? The Bein Inn is a nice place which used to be a regular stop before the M90 was extended to Perth. I'm a little ( ok a lot) surprised at the choice of venue cause we could have had plenty venues in Edinburgh that would have been ideal. Lucy's management give us a shout for next year and we'll guarantee you a sellout in Edinburgh. Whatever! It was one heckuva day for me and the five hours of driving time was really not as much of a chore as one would think! From leaving work at noon like a schoolboy playing hookey (I told them I was going to see my therapist) to the surprising sign off the freeway leading me to a quick side-trip down "Falcon Ridge Road" to the "Falcon Ridge Golf Course" (covered in snow, by now).... To the 4" of newly fallen snow covering the pines like delicate icing and my watching giant freighters navigate the channel, raise the lift-bridge, and head out of Duluth Harbor....the entire day was one visual and audio treat after another. But I digress: Here is the song list: (forgive the mis-spellings, I'm at work!) 1) No Place To Fall (Townes Van Zandt) 2) One Good Reason 3) Guilty As Sin 4) I Know What Kind Of Love This Is (The Nields) 5) Ten Year Night 6) Crazy Dreams (Paul Brady) 7) Don't Mind Me 8) What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding? (Nick Lowe) 9) It's Time To Go 10) Written On The Back Of Her Hand (?) a new song 11) Just You Tonight (on an upright piano) 12) A Song About Pi (Irving Kaplansky) 13) End Of The Day 14) Turn The Lights Back On 15) You're Still Standing There (Steve Earle) 16) Scorpion (E) Guineviere (Robin Batteau) With one exception, I will refrain from telling Lucy's stories (even the new ones) because of the soul searching initiated at a recent Shindell/Nields show when some members of the audience remarked about how they thought that internet fans may be getting a little carried away when they post the jokes, anecdotes, and between song banter of a performer's show for the benefit of those not present. (That was the beginning of the "what is a folk stalker?" thread on the Richard List.) The one story I'll make exception for here is that she remarked about how she was using us as a sort-of test audience for the cover tunes which she was debating to include on the new album (with at least one notable exception: "Broken Things" was already locked-in for the new CD...hooray!). Of course two of those covers listed above she's already recorded. Finally, I must remark briefly about Lucy's professionalism and persistence. When doing the soundcheck prior to last night's show, unexpected problems were encountered which not only made it take FOREVER (like over a half an hour!) but in a most unpleasant way (screeches, pops, howls....sometimes at ear splitting volume). Still Lucy stuck with it standing up there on stage in this most unflattering light until all the problems were resolved. Then she immediately handed the stage over to the warm-up act Alice Peacock! Alice played a chord or two, spoke into the mike and then remarked how perfect the sound had become, thanks to Lucy. She proceeded to utterly rock the joint. Alice is also a Flem-Tam artist, based in Chicago. But without Lucy to stand up there and wrestle with the sound issue beforehand, Alice's debut could have been seriously marred. Just a side of Lucy that we don't see so much now that she is writing and performing her own work solo instead of adding harmony parts to others' work--Lucy as a devoted helper to fellow musicians. As for my own little musical project that I brought to her attention, thanks Lucy for your friendly gesture! Hi folks, I'd just like to say thank you for the warm welcomes I've received from the list. What a nice bunch of people Lucy fans are! Maybe it's not so surprising considering how great Lucy herself seems to be. A quicky update: Mum called back to say that the Lucy song she likes so much on the radio is "One Good Reason". So I'm contemplating bringing my guitar over with me so I can play it for her, but think I'm way too nervous about how Air Canada will treat it. Ah well. On an absolutely wierd note, about an hour after I sent my message to the list I got a phone call from a "Jeopardy" (yep the TV show) official to let me know that I was one of the lucky few people randomly picked from the thousands upon thousands of Canadians that applied for the contestant search they're having here in two weeks. So I get to go audition for them, and try to pass their test. *Very Psyched* and nervous about that too, especially since I'm the kinda chicky that would write "future Jeopardy contestant" under Ambition in my highschool yearbook profile. LOL. Which leads me to think, that for many of us, the holiday season is coming up quickly, the daylight hours are slipping away still, and it's getting cold out there too. For some it can be a really good time of year, and for others, difficult. Recently it seems like the fates have begun to smile upon me, and well honestly, I've done nothing in particular to deserve it. But, hey, I'll take it. ;-) I know it's the Lucy-list, but there's a line from a Mary Chapin Carpenter song "the Moon & St. Christopher" that keeps echoing about my head a lot recently, and it's where she sings "funny how the world lives up to all your expectations". And it just strikes such a lovely, and all too rarely heard optimistic note. I sincerely hope that at this time, or at least eventually in time, that the world starts living up to all of your expectations. That each of you have a wonderful and joyous holiday season and beyond. And if things aren't going so well at the moment, that they'll get better soon. Who knows, maybe tomorrow you'll hear for the very first time what will eventually become your all time favourite song, (or maybe Lucy has already written it ) or you'll discover your favourite book, or see your favourite movie for the very first time, or even meet the person who will become your best friend. Maybe you'll find that four leaf clover you've been looking for, or some other wonderful experience. You just never know. But I'm hoping for that kind of beauty for us all. Wow, seems I've totally lost track of my stoic side ... :-) Mari ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2000 01:12:39 EST From: Leewalling@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Good luck Mari Mari, Good luck with Jeaporady and thank you for the holiday blessings.
