Great gig, lots of variation, and a nice rendition of the title track, 'Red Dirt Girl', my favourite song on the album. Spyboy were just great, but I agree with Maureen that the backing sound, particularly drums, was pitched too high. I find this a problem with most American shows here-when you have a voice as exquisite and clear as Emmylou's you don't need a thumping bass drum competing with it all night. Its interesting that the other two reports liked the songs with no percussion best of all. Don't get me wrong, Buddy Miller and his pals were superb, just too far forward in the mix. My one other complaint is that I couldn't make out the words of the songs most of the time. I think this bass drum intrudes on the album too much also. I call it 'Drum Blight', and too much music suffers from it, particularly acoustic artists who seem to discover percussion, and then overdose on it! Patty griffin was OK with us, nothing more. My wife and I were surprised that although she seemed flattered to have a few shouted requests for some of her songs, she didn't sing the damn things! Good concert though, great album too, Walter ------------------------------ Date: 23 Nov 2000 20:55:55 +0000 From: "Matt Bloomfield" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Patty at RAH On *Wed, 22 Nov 2000 19:12:28 -0000* In message *[lucy-list] Patty at RAH* *Dave McKay* wrote: > > Patty Griffin > > she's > > got > > a great voice, it's a pity the sound let her down last night, > > You must've been in a funny seat, acoustically, Matt, because Patty > sounded just fine to me. Not sure the lack of familiarity was the problem, well not for me, I heard a few people where I was sitting comment on the sound levels, it was almost piercing in places. I was in L 73 I think, excellent seat actually, at the front of the stalls, and to the right as you look at the stage. > I hope this toe in the UK waters is a precursor to a headline tour > when her new CD comes out. I'd like to see her in a smaller venue, I think she did a great job with the performance I just think she was let down by the sound people. > That was Buddy Miller. I look forward to that, genius barely does him justice.
