You must've been in a funny seat, acoustically, Matt, because Patty sounded just fine to me. Her set was wonderful, and she coped well with a seemingly unappreciative audience. That wasn't "bawling into the mic" ... it was a powerful voice under perfect control. I guess not many were familiar with her body of work ... it was certainly disconcerting to applaud the intros to Goodbye and Mary (the final song) and find my clapping echoing around the hall in stark solitude. I hope this toe in the UK waters is a precursor to a headline tour when her new CD comes out. She deserves an intimate night at the 12 Bar or Borderline. She is a special performer, and her set was the highlight of my night, as I knew it would be. > I wish I'd > paid more attention when she introduced the band, because every one of > the band deserves an individual mention especially the guitarist, you > will not see a performance like that twice. That was Buddy Miller. The man is a genius, and he performs that way every time he's on stage. Hopefully he'll be touring here with his wife Julie soon ... he did promise back in February! On drums was the equally amazing Brady Blades. Darryl Johnson usually supplies the Spyboy bass, but I think it was someone else this time, a more than adequate replacement. I can't say Emmy herself rang any particular bells. As Peter Mulvey remarks in the current Performing Songwriter, "[her] ghostly, reedy voice sounds that way because it's always a few cents sharp", and I can't really cope with that for too long. But then, as far as I was concerned, Patty wasn't opening for Emmy ... Emmy was closing for Patty! :-) Dave. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 17:52:00 -0500 From: traylor@juno.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Hightstown Graham and I will be in Hightstown Sat!
