I was very much looking forward to catching Lucy both as City Mouse and Country Mouse ten days from now. She is playing a Friday night show at a cozy deli in the Minnesota north country and playing near Downtown Minneapolis the following night. I saw Cheryl Wheeler at that deli last Spring and was amazed that if you just show up early and buy dinner you can just park right up front like some kinda VIP. I even envisioned taking people along on this (short) road trip for the intimate experience they would likely not get at the larger, city show. Imagine my surprise when I called yesterday and was told that the show was sold out! Well, dang! Good going Lucy! Now I would be happy just to squeeze myself in.... Need someone to sell merchandise? Watching Nina play with anyone is fun (go to Kate Wolf Fest to see her play with EVERYONE!) but especialy with Lucy. Hopefully she'll break out her little teeny 12 string electric guitar, which my friend Albert and I believed was an electric mandolin (which we referred to as "The MandoBlaster" from last June's Katefest until Oct 26 when Lucy set us straight. I still dig that name "mandoblaster", though) Yeah, so go! katie Katie Stohlmann stohlman@sfsu.edu http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~stohlman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 15:01:18 EST From: Bernhot@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Bottom Line Raise your hand if you will be there Friday night? It was my first Emmylou concert, Red Dirt Girl was the first ELH CD I bought so that was fitting I s'pose. The RAH was packed out, very few empty seats, and Patty Griffin opened which I thought was going to be a nice surprise with all the recommendations I've had and read about for her CDs. Unfortunately, the sound was screwy, sometimes her guitar drowned her out sometimes it just seemed like she was bawling into the mic. However, the last two songs she sang were quieter and I think did her more justice, particularly when she dueted with Emmylou for the last song, she's got a great voice, it's a pity the sound let her down last night, I'll certainly be checking out some more of her stuff. There was a short intermission after Patty, which meant we got just over 2hrs straight of Emmylou. Her performance, and indeed Spyboy's was phenomenal. It was just the four of them, a bassist, a drummer (incredible) a guitarist (master of his art) and Emmylou. I wish I'd paid more attention when she introduced the band, because every one of the band deserves an individual mention especially the guitarist, you will not see a performance like that twice! I'm not familiar at all with EL's stuff so the only stuff I'd heard before was from the album, plus a couple of covers, Love Hurts and Pancho and Lefty spring to mind. If you've got Red Dirt Girl you'll know how good it is, her solo Bang the Drum Slowly was brilliant. If you're in any doubts about seeing Emmylou while she's in the UK and can still get tickets, do go, you will not be dissapointed. Fair warning: I am a big Patty Griffin fan, but Flaming Red can have a tendency to turn some away from her. I love it, but a lot of it rocks pretty loudly. Living With Ghosts is just Patty and her guitar, much quieter. My favorite Patty song is on Flaming Red and still makes my hair stand up: Mary. Be forwarned but do give her a chance. She has a new cd coming out in a couple of months. Lucy on Fri at the Bottom Line w/ Ellis Paul and a band. Lucy on Sat at Hightstown with Cheryl Wheeler. It doesn't get much better than that!!! Maybe I'll finally get over the fact that the show in my hometown was cancelled. Lucy two nights in a row is sure to be the cure!! Hope to see many Lucy-listers there.
