If, like me prior to Saturday night, you've never heard of Mindy Jostyn, go out and get ALL of her CDs NOW (www.MindyJostyn.com). Mindy opened for The Kennedys in Lexington, MA, and I was absolutely spellbound. I think anyone who loves Lucy would really love Mindy too. First off, Mindy is a prodigious musical talent (in the words of Pete Kennedy, "she's our favorite five-piece band"). During her opening set, she played guitar, fiddle, accordion and harmonica (Mindy is the only female harmonica player on the books in the NYC musicians union), and sang. She has a very supple, expressive voice and is a ham on top of it all. Secondly, her lyrics are wonderful layers of stories that you just find yourself drawn into. My favorite was a song she sang about the relationship between FDR, Eleanor and Lucy Page Mercer. She captured so poignantly the intricacy of their triangle, how each was important to both the other two. Listening to Mindy's songs is like having Harry Potter read aloud to you, and her narrators come from everywhere.....an antisocial loner (which she remarked might be difficult to believe coming from her, as she is currently seven-months' pregnant with her second child), a husband leaving his family for another woman, a bar scene, so many wonderful vignettes. After her set, Mindy and her fiddle then joined Pete and Maura for a nearly unrehearsed version of the Coo Coo, and she clicked with them. The energy between she and Pete as they traded licks was every bit as intense as the energy between he and Maura. During the second set, she was called up to play (and sing) along on Crazy (an old Patsy Cline tune) and played on Sirens and Life is Large as well....all of these were unrehearsed, and Mindy had never heard any Kennedys tunes before. Pete gave her the key and the structure for each song, and they just took off. She was just amazing, and the three of them really just played off one another in a way that was so fresh and exciting. Mindy has an amazing string of credits as well.....check out her website for the details, as I wouldn't want to leave any of them out, and there are so many (Carly Simon, Kate Taylor.....). I think she has a new album coming out this month as well. If any of you are in the Riverdale, NY area on November 12th, you have a chance to catch her last show before she embarks on her maternity leave. There have been no shows scheduled for next year; she's going to play it entirely by ear and see how things settle in the family with the new baby. I cannot encourage you enough to GO. If you do, tell her I sent you!! If you can't catch her, then keep your eyes peeled for when she goes back on the road. Thanks for letting me rave!! Peace, Sheila The greatest thing, I have learned, Is to dig, and be dug in return. - - The Kennedys, Hey Vin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2000 18:46:27 -0000 From: "Iain Geddes" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Mindy Jostyn (NLC) I have great admiration for Mindy as well. I first came across her when she toured with Joe Jackson and was very impressed with how multi talented she was. I have a video of a Joe Jackson concert in Australia where Joe is introducing his band and left Mindy to the end and announced "Mindy Jostyn on everything else". I think she had played acoustic, electric, fiddle and percussion at some point. Getting a hold of her music here in Scotland is nigh on impossible so I really will have to get albums sent from the states. I do have a few poor photos of Mindy with Carly Simon on my website (if you call it that!!) which is kind of under construction at http://www.iaingeddes.clara.net/music but they're pretty poor. You have been warned. To keep the Lucy content, we're all dying with anticipation to see Lucy on the 17th Dec. in Glasgow. All the Scottish listers will be there I reckon. Have been for quite a while. But for some odd reason every once in a while (maybe every other month) I receive an "welcome, you are now subscribed to the Lucy Kaplansky- announcement-list" mail, telling me I just subscribed. Going by that my address must have been added to the list at least 10 times by now :) is this happening to anybody else as well? I haven't received actual multiple announcements so far, but it still is weird to get a welcome-mail every so often. Anybody in the know?
