Basie Theater, Troy Savings Music Hall, etc ... it was not due to poor advertising. The executive directors of three of the theaters informed us that for the first time, major shows have been canceled, and that the attendance is down for a great number of shows. It was with great regret, and much soul searching, that these concerts were canceled. All the food banks in each state highlighted the shows in their newsletters which went out to tens of thousands of people. We also had great support from John Weingart on WPRB, who was announcing both the Phil and Red Bank shows, and especially from WXPN. Michaela Mijoun AND Gene Shay have been announcing the shows for quite a while. There was considerable support from the area radio stations in all the cities where the concerts were being held, including feature articles in major papers, and paid advertising. In New Jersey, Cathy Donnelly on NJ 101.5 had been talking about the show for the last month, and was going to host the show. The station was doing announcements about the show, and even bringing their van to give away promotional items. The ticket sales just weren't there. All the performers scheduled to appear were satisfied that no avenue was left unexplored when it came to promoting the shows. Almost a year went into trying to make these shows successful, especially since local foodbanks were supposed to benefit. Fortunately, the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank and the Community Food Bank of New Jersey received considerable donations from the HeartStrings shows that featured Rockapella, which occurred in mid Oct. At this time, a show featuring Cherish the Ladies at the Union County Arts Center in Rahway on Dec. 1st is selling very well, so we expect that the Community Food Bank of New Jersey will once again receive a nice donation. Enough said.
