The first article was a piece on Joan Baez who appeared last night in Morristown. There are a number of artists mentioned in the article (including Richard and Dar), but in discussing how Joan has changed, the author (Robbie Woliver) states; "Even Ms. Baez's voice and phrasing have changed, becoming more subtle, even grittier. Known for her almost operatic soprano, she has found a warmer tone in recent years. The opening cut of her latest recording, "Gone From Danger," is almost unrecognizable as a Joan Baez song, sounding like it could have easily been influenced by the voice and phrasing of Lucy Kaplansky, a distinctive contemporary singer-songwriter. Ms. Baez credits her new lifestyle for "loosening" her voice." Now I ask you, how cool is that!?!? I guess that I have to go and at least listen to the cd. Has anyone heard it yet? Hmmm. Gone From Danger may be her "latest", but it's been out since 1997! I can just about see the Lucyesque leanings in the first two bars of vocals on the opening track (Sinead Lohan's No Mermaid), but from then on it's unmistakably Joan! Gone From Danger, incidentally, is stuffed full of Richard Shindell and Dar Williams covers. It is a wonderful album (pretty old already, dates back to fall 97) (well, there are people who will strongly disagree, but really, there is no doubt about the supreme quality of this album IMHO). I pretty much own every "regular" Joan album there is and comparing the early ones to this one, yes, her voice has changed a lot, and I like the "older", softer, warmer and darker voice much better than the early achingly pure soprano. I'm not sure if the opening cut (Sinead Lohan's "no mermaid") reminds one of Lucy, I'd listen to it right now to make sure, but I just moved yesterday and the CD is burried in one of the many boxes and I have no idea where it is, so I'll have to postpone that. But it definitely is a song that would fit nicely in Lucy's repertoire. All in all, the album is wonderful, her best in years. If you buy it, try to find the limited edition that's only sold at Borders (not sure if there are still copies around though), because it has a bonus CD with two cuts from Newport 97: Joan and Dar doing Danglin Conversation and Joan and Betty Elders doing Betty's wonderful song "Long Bed from Kenya", one of my favorite sad love songs, right up there with Christine Lavin's "The kind of love you never recover from". Hi all, this is Jessica -- haven't posted for a while because I've been all over the country. But I am back in my dear NYC -- though a bit overwhelmed by the city right now -- and looking forward to seeing Emmylou tomorrow. Not to mention Patty Griffin -- a new find and recent favorite of mine. Maybe we'll see the Doc!
