I can see now why these Northeastern United States-based lists rave about him (and SharonG can't deny her crush on him!) The man is dashing, simply dashing. Ellis' band for this tour was comprised of Don Conoscenti and Christopher Williams, both guitar-playing singer-songwriters themselves (though Chris apparently drew the short straw because he was playing percussion all night). I'm not sure why the Gingko Coffeehouse made the move from their cozy space (where the 75 or so folks would have filled it to slightly over capacity) to the music auditorium at the college three blocks away (which was only about 1/3 - 1/4 full), but they did. The room didn't quite soak up the amplified sound the way the sound engineer had envisioned so the mix was not very good. After awhile, the band decided to abandon the PA system entirely until it could be "tweaked" during break and they came out and parked themselves in front of the stage (in what would be the orchestra pit) playing acoustic with hand percussion and box guitars. Even the harmonies were in what appeared to be an effortless balance without mikes. It was apparent that this was not at all unusual for the trio--that they would feel as comfortable playing around a folk-fest campfire or someones kitchen as in a crowded bar or a stadium full of baseball fans. Audience members were requesting songs Ellis said hadn't been played in six years and they'd quickly re-tune and do them on the spot! They took lots of musical chances. After the break they took sonic flight on waves of electric guitar effects, open acoustic tunings and those "floating, edge-of-falsetto" vocals. They beckoned the audience for their feedback--what's working, what's not? Then for the end of the show, they came back out front to the orchestra pit. They did the encore in the aisle on the stairs...(no fire marshalls were present!) It was great to see such seasoned musicians be so flexible and daring at a gig. As they make their way across the country I can only encourage you all to check them out. Lucy content: He was on Lucy's "team" that fateful weekend in early July last summer in which seemingly all the folk talent available got evenly divided-up between simultaneous folk festivals in Winnipeg and New Bedford. (We got Dar, the Nields, Catie, Peter...you got Richard, Lucy, Ellis, etc. etc.) Hope that doesn't happen again! Funny you should ask where Lucyka is, 'cuz I suspect she will be wandering these city streets next week BUT NOT PLAYING for us! Consulting the schedule, one sees her playing the coming weekend on the right coast (MA ) and weekend following on the left coast (OR) and one tiny cameo performance (maybe five songs) warming up for a speaker at a benefit in LaCrosse, Wisconsin about two-and-a-half hours from my house here in the heart of the heartland (or "flyover land" for some). I tormented over making that drive there and back in one night when I really didn't have any great desire to hear the speaker. But seeing as how her record company is right here in town, I figure she must be stopping here to conduct some business, enit? That would mean she could be walking my fair streets anonymously maybe Weds or Thurs. Open your guitar case on the street and start to play. I will find you! Well the LaCrosse roadtrip dream kinda went "poof" last week when wife took a new assignment to teach a short course on "Le Petit Prince" for five Thursdays, leaving child care hanging for Lucy-in-LaCrosse Thursday, the 19th. I would gladly go and see her cameo if I could be an NPR (non-paid roadie) but I haven't heard back from Red House so I assume they must have chartered her a private jet for the trip to LaCrosse and they don't have room. Have any of you heard anything about a jet? That would explain it. Yes, Sharon, I think about you often...and with mucho gratitude. I especially thought of you when Oakland beat NY in game one. Sorry bout the mixup with your crushes. I told Ellis of Sharon's Beautiful Mess and my utter paralysis while standing in front of your CD collection with only an hour to kill before heading up to Falcon Ridge choosing, (of all things!) disc One of his double LIVE CD to tape and take in the car for the ride. All those CD's and only time to record one of em! Well I bought the (complete) LIVE CD last night at the show. That's enough about Mr. Paul. He's probably got his own list somewhere. Lucy content: If you need a free roadie and have room on your jet for one more, my number is (612) 729-8878. I am lightweight and compact and don't mind airline food.
